Nice visit to one of the greatest monuments in Brindisi, can also access it and climb to the top or get a lift up.

Giungendo a Brindisi dal mare, non appena si accede nel porto interno (naturalmente diramato in due parti dette seno di levante e seno di ponente), si incontra il Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia realizzato nel 1933 a forma di timone che spicca per la sua altezza (54 metri) e posizione. Visto dall'alto, l'insieme dell'intera costruzione, ha l'aspetto di un uccello stilizzato. La raccolta dei fondi per la costruzione duro' circa 10 anni, vi partecipo' anche il tenore Tito Schipa grazie agli incassi dei suoi concerti appositamente organizzati nel 1926 nelle maggiori città italiane. All'interno del Monumento, realizzato in cemento armato e ricoperto in pietra di carparo, nei diversi piani vi sono sale dove sono esposti oggetti e reperti storici tra cui l'urna contenente la sabbia di El Alamein, le le ampolle contenenti le acque dei cinque oceani, nonché un fregio donato dalla Presidenza della Repubblica. Inoltre vi è un percorso fotografico ubicato lungo le pareti delle scale interne, utile a seguire le varie fasi della costruzione nonchè della cerimonia di inaugurazione del Monumento. Dal terrazzo, accessibile al pubblico, la vista sulla città e sul porto è molto suggestiva. Nel dente del monumento, quasi alla sua sommità, nel 1954 fu collocata la statua in marmo della Madonna. ENGLISH Monuments - ITALIAN SAILOR MONUMENT (The "Big Rudder") Crossing the Pigonati Channel you enter the main port, naturally divided in two parts, West and East Coves; at this point one meets the Italian Sailor Monument (called also the Big Rudder) built in 1933 in the shape of a rudder, which stands 54 meters tall. Together with the Romans Columns it is considered the symbol of the city. It was planned by Luigi Brunati and Amerigo Bartoli and built out of local solid stone of a beautiful golden colour. It's 53 mts. high.The funds for this construction took approximately 10 years to collect and the famous tenor Tito Schipa took a particular interest in this project contributing the takings from his concerts. At the base of the monument is a sacred chapel in memory of the fallen sailors during both world wars as well as the bell from the battle ship “Benedetto Brin” , which sank in the port of Brindisi in 1915. Inside there are engraved the names of the 6.000 italian sailors fallen during the first war world, to whose memory the monument has been dedicated. On the upper large square are kept the anchors of the Austro-Hungarian battleships "Tegethoff" and "Viribus Unitis" sunk by the Italians in 1918 as well two submarine cannons of the same era. A marble Our Lady statue has been put at the top of the monument in 1954. From the top of monument the panoramic view to the city and harbour is most impressive (photo). Das Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia ist ein Marine-Ehrenmal in Brindisi. Es wurde zwischen 1932 und 1933 zum Gedenken an die im Ersten Weltkrieg gefallenen italienischen Seeleute errichtet. Umgeben wird es von einer festungsartigen Anlage, die von oben betrachtet die Form eines stilisierten fliegenden Vogels hat. "Il monumento al marinaio" befindet sich im Stadtteil Casale, das liegt auf der anderen Seite der Hafenpromenade von Brindisi. Es gibt einen Boot Service, der regelmäßig vom Hafen zum Casale fährt, nahe der "Colonne Romane" auf der Hafenpromenade. Mit dem Auto braucht man relativ lange um auf die andere Stadtseite zu kommen, die Straße die dorthin führt ist immer sehr stark befahren. Das Monument befindet sich an einen Park mit einem großen Spielplatz, wo sich Kinder austoben können.
