From unique 5000-year-old stone carvings to relics of the Phoenician, Roman, Arab and Medieval Christian eras on the island, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology is a small but important window onto the earliest cultures of Gozo up to the arrival of the Knights of St John. Sculptures of human figures from the prehistoric Ġgantija Temple complex and the nearby ix-Xagħra Circle burial site are highlights of the collection. traces the history of this tawny island from the Neolithic era up to the Early Modern period. A number of impressive Bronze Age relics are on display here, but this pretty townhouse, located in Rabat’s Citadel, is an architectural landmark in its own right
Within the Citadel, is the lovely museum houses a number Phoenician, Punic, and Roman artefacts found on several sites in Gozo and Comino as well as artefacts from the period of the Knights of St John.
We highly recommend to visit this small museum in the Citadel, Victoria. It gives you a very clear idea of prehistoric Gozo and you can see all the amazing over 2000 years old amphoras found in Xlendi bay in the 1950s, 60s and recently in 2007.
