An art as old as the world
The history of Volterra has been intertwined since its origins with the working of alabaster, a translucent mineral, at the center of the fortunes of the town since the Etruscan era, more than 2000 years ago.
In the extraordinary medieval old town, the workshops of the alabastrai masters still survive, using traditional techniques to produce sculptures, small furnishings, plates, vases and lamps in alabaster. In the passages between the different generations, traditional artifacts have been joined by innovative creations. In some of the laboratories, visitors can attend in person the working of alabaster or participate in workshops to learn from the craftsmen the basic techniques of this production of excellence.
