Local Seafood. It was usually swimming that morning. Close-by. Po-Boys are good as well. Gumbo is very good as well. Get a local beer, like Abita to wash it down. Also the fried crab claws are excellent as an appetizer.

Chef Susan Spicer's Lakeview restaurant. For those of you that watched Treme on HBO, the chef character was modeled after Susan Spicer. Food is outstanding. Bit pricy, but always good.

Pizza. Eat in. Good stuff. Last time we were there, Anthony Mackie (plays the Falcon in Avengers/Capt. America movies) was in there eating quietly with friends. Can't promise that every time, but the pizza is good and sometimes you just want a pizza.

Really good iced mocha's. Most of their coffees are like desserts. If you like sweet, this is the place. Frozen mocha's, frozen chocolate milk for the kiddos, and frozen cappuccino's are good as well.

Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) sat outside here on Magazine relaxing during his recording with Allison Krauss in New Orleans. This isn't near the house, but I always stop in, when in that part of Uptown. My favorite coffee shop in the city.
Drinks & Nightlife
New Orleans Music spot, hidden away in plain sight. Catch whoever's playing. Barbecue usually available as well. Live music. You can also catch the street car down to the quarter from there. Some tourists will find their way there, but mostly locals.

Great wine as the name implies (Bacchus, god of wine), great food and enjoy music as well. Nighttime is fun, but some locals like to hang on the back patio drinking wine and ordering small plates during a lazy afternoon.

Start at Spotted Cat, get a drink, listen to some great New Orleans old school jazz and work your way down the street. Clubs up and down the street offer live music seven days a week. You can go down early and eat and hang out, but things really don't get going until after 9:30 or so usually. Places like Bamboula's, d.b.a., Cafe Negril, Snug Harbor, Blue Nile, Maison, Vaso, Rare Form are some of what you'll find wandering down the street with your drinks in go cups. You might even see my cousin playing trumpet. Usually a brass band playing on the street as well.

That was back in the 1800's. Today it is the fifth largest urban park in the country and run by a non-profit. You can rent bikes, kayaks, paddle-boats to explore the lakes and lagoons. Or you can walk along the trails under the largest stand of live oaks (hundreds of years old and covered in spanish moss) in the country. Eat beignets and good strong coffee at Morning Call and walk it off amongst the beautiful trees. Beautiful place for the day.

Interesting shops are located along the Harrison Avenue corridor in the heart of Lakeview. Little Miss Muffin has a lot of New Orleans themed gifts and knick knacks that make for that perfect item to take home or send to friends.
