Burgas is an unique place for every birdwatcher. What is making it different from any other Bulgarian site, is the all-year round abundance of birds. This is the only Bulgarian area where three big wetlands have been preserved - Atanasovsko Lake, Burgas Lake (Vaya) and Manra Complex. Being very different - hyperhalline, brakish and fresh water wetlands, together with the sea they provide very different ecological conditions and suitable habitats for many birds, including endangered ones. This makes Burgas one of the few European cities surrounded by wetlands of international importance for birds. The city is situated on one of the major migration flyways in Europe, known as Via Pontica. The unique position at the westernmost point of the entire Black Sea coastline is the reason for extremmely intensive bird migration here, as most of the birds follow the coastline. Milions of passerines, but also waders, gulls and terns, bee-eaters, swifts and other, together with more than 200,000 White Storks and 100,000 Raptors of over 30 species pass every season over the city. Is it not natural in this case Burgas to be recognised as the Bird Capital of Bulgaria!

The "PODA" Nature Reserve is a unique place for every bird lover. What distinguishes it from any other city in Bulgaria is the abundance of birds in all seasons. This is the only region in Bulgaria where three large water reservoirs have survived - Atanasovsko lake, Bourgas lake (Vaya) and Mandren complex.
