‘ANAEHO’OMALU BAY – Another nice Kohala beach. Even those born and raised here usually call this six-syllable tongue twister A BAY. This long, curving salt-and-pepper sand beach is popular with both locals and visitors. The swimming is best in the sandy center, whereas the snorkeling (though not…

Fun access to beach also near the Waikoloa shopping areas, Lavalava beach club close. Travel Directions: Turn left at MM 76, into Waikoloa Beach Resort. Turn left right past the Queen Shops, and go to the parking lot at the end of the road.

“KE-AWA-IKI BEACH – This black sand-and-gravel-lined bay is never crowded due to the access-to get there you have to walk on a lava road half the time, and rougher ‘a’a trail to the right of the fence the other half. Few on the island even know it’s there. (It takes about 15 minutes to walk to it.) The water off the left (south) is clear and offers good snorkeling when calm, but be wary of currents. The best snorkeling is usually in the center of the bay. If you keep walking past the southern edge of the bay, there are lots of tide-pools to explore on an older, smooth pahoehoe lava shelf at low tide. Past the right (northern) side of Ke-awa-iki Bay is Pueo Bay, lined with black pebbles and semi-protected with nice swimming on calm days. Located 20 miles north of Kailua-Kona just after mile marker 79.”
