Public transport is more convenient than a car; during the rush hour it is faster and parking in the city is often tricky and expensive. Uber can be a good alternative but tourists will enjoy the ferry. Use the AT journey planner from their website. Buses travel to the city every 15min during working days but Ferries are usually hourly. Use the AT Hop card on buses, trains and ferries; it is more convenient and cheaper.

Public transport is poor compared to most cities because Auckland is not densely populated. There are reasonable bus services to Albany, Glenfield, Birkenhead and Birkenhead wharf but otherwise use Uber or hire a vehicle. Most of Auckland North Shore is hilly and therefore only suitable for fit cyclists and drivers are dangerous because cyclists are uncommon.
