There’s a school of thought that encourages us to be mindful of our surroundings when constructing our buildings. Feng shui literally translates into wind-water and if this is your cup of tea and even if it’s not, then you cannot help but be swept up into the warm and friendly ambiance that has been lovingly created at Sam’s on the Beach. This once RNLI lifeboat station began as old boat house and slip way all of 150 years ago and although we don’t do anything as dramatic as save lives anymore, but they can certainly still put smiles on peoples faces with Sam’s tried and tested formula of great food, great staff and great atmosphere. With it’s custom-built wood burning pizza oven churning out artisan slices of heaven, combined with the traditionally exceptional seafood that has become so familiar at Sam’s, The Beach is truly a Combers’ paradise. The open kitchen allows you to see all the action inside, while the floor to ceiling windows bring the outside in during the cold winter months, allowing you to bask in the beauty of Polkerris harbour and the whole of St Austell Bay beyond. During the summer we lose the windows altogether and just let the light shine on in. Think Ibizan bistro, blissed out beats and cool cocktails. Lazing on the terrace, soaking up the sun – a vibe that has to be experienced first hand to be fully appreciated. So if any of this sounds appealing and let’s be honest it all does then follow the signs from Par where tucked away down a Cornish lane you’ll find Sam’s on The Beach, a great place to escape to – whatever the weather.

Just a few miles outside Truro, deep in the beautiful Roseland countryside, you’ll find the Kings Head in the tiny hamlet of Ruan Lanihorne. At the head of the Fal Estuary and close to the magical Lamorran Woods this is a traditional Country Pub with a warm welcome, great beers and an imaginative menu. Winter time sees us with roaring fires, beamed ceilings, friendly ambience and a comfy sofa, a choice of winter warming dishes to make you feel cozy with perhaps a glass of mulled wine. Summertime, in the late afternoon sunshine, or at a lunchtime on the terrace, under the trees with, a jug of Pimms maybe and some patio heaters should it get cooler, maybe with a plate of Langoustines or Scallops that have been caught that afternoon. Whatever the season, the Kings Head responds, welcoming all year, whatever the weather. Reservations recommended.

Brett Camborne-Paynter, chef-proprietor, came to Carlyon Bay having recently won 2 AA rosettes for the Parkside in Buckinghamshire. With a classical training from top restaurants including The Ivy, The Waldorf and The Four Seasons where he worked alongside Jean-Christophe Novelli from Hell's Kitchen fame, Brett's clean, no-nonsense approach is complemented by his team's attention to detail. A genuine commitment to using the very best local ingredients, respecting seasonal variations, means that the menu changes regularly but the food on your plate is always prepared and cooked with understanding, passion and care. The service is truly Cornish, warm and friendly yet attentive with the clear aim of making every visit a pleasure. Perhaps it is the combination of all the above and Brett's innovative flair that gained 2 AA rosettes. Reservations recommended.

The great 13th-century circular shell-keep of Restormel still encloses the principal rooms of the castle in remarkably good condition. It stands on an earlier Norman mound surrounded by a deep dry ditch, atop a high spur beside the River Fowey. Twice visited by the Black Prince, it finally saw action during the Civil War in 1644.

Drinks & Nightlife

You know a pub's doing something right when it's packed to the gills in the middle of the afternoon. Regulars trek in from a 30 mile radius, while the locals think they have died and gone to heaven. Walk inside and the welcome is instant. The lounge bar has the feel of the old-fashioned parlour you might remember from childhood. Toby jugs hang from the wooden beams while the walls are festooned with local photographs Food specials are home cooked, including chicken and ham pie and a hearty and delicious vegetable soup. But what makes the Blisland Inn really stand out is that Gary manages to keep at least six real ales on in perfect nick. Walk into the public bar and you're greeted by that most heart-warming sight: a row of hand pumps dispensing ales both local and from further a field.
