The official opening of the Haliburton Sculpture Forest took place in the fall of 2001 with the installation of three sculptures in Glebe Park. Over the years a remarkable outdoor gallery has been created with sculptures nestled along the trails. The collection now includes thirty-four sculptures and six one-of-a-kind benches, by Canadian and International artists. The Haliburton Sculpture Forest began as a project of the Arts Committee of the Haliburton County Development Corporation which was focused on local economic development through the arts. The objective was to create a destination for residents, visitors and tourists which highlighted the visual arts in Haliburton County. In 2004, a new campus for Fleming College, Haliburton School of Art + Design was created in Glebe Park. The Sculpture Forest surrounds the College and serves as a teaching site for many of the programs in addition to being a great place for local residents and visitors to go for a walk and enjoy the sculptures in different seasons.

Just a very short drive outside of the village of Haliburton is Skyline Drive. A winding uphill road will take you to the Skyline Park. While there are no designated parking spots, people just park their cars on the side and then walk towards the viewing area. You can literally see miles and miles into the Haliburton Highlands. It is spectacular in all seasons but especially in the fall with the deciduous trees sporting yellow, orange and red colours.

Haliburton Forest is an unusual company. It is an outdoor lover’s paradise and a wood lover’s dream. It is a research facility and an education centre. It is a property where members of our community make their livelihood, and thousands of visitors make their day. It is a major force in the hardwood lumber industry, with three operating sawmills. It is 100,000 acres, 100 lakes, and millions of trees, and it is home to countless creatures.

If you like country drives and small hikes, this is for you! The road to get there is picturesque, especially in the fall. Plan enough time to stop at the nearby stone Anglican church, the Stanhope museum and the Stanhope airport. The log chute is a wonderful piece of history, shooting logs from Algonquin park to the mills north of Lake Ontario- logs could take two years to make the trip! Adjacent to the site, you will see a map outlining the many hiking trails that are part of the Headwaters of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Many are short but well marked. We recommend visiting as a great family outing. (Drive past to the end of the road to the quaint Hawk Lake marina and store- treat yourself to an ice cream or butter tart!)
