The white castle by the river, the restored old state capitol survived occupation by union troops, as well as countless busloads of grade-school kids on field trips. Check out the amazing central staircase and stained glass for yourself, and check out the small but very interesting exhibit on Huey P. Long's legacy.

Walkable from downtown and Spanish Town, the "new" state capitol is a Art Deco masterpiece full of history. Check out the Huey P. Long statue on the park grounds or the nearby civil war barracks, original site of LSU.

This is actually a must-see. Quick and easy to get to and only $3, this kind of nature area is unique to the Gulf Coast. The trails are all boardwalks with railings, so it's a nature hike but in style. Something to do while in Baton Rouge, and then afterwards it's a short drive to Jimmy Swaggart's mega church! Just kidding, but it is a short drive to Mall of Louisiana and the movies.
