As New Yorkers and Bostonians try to remain close to home, New York’s Hudson Valley is as popular as ever. Thankfully, the town of Hudson hasn’t rested on its laurels one bit. The past few months have brought a gorgeously designed boutique hotel, a stellar bakery that excels in sourdough, and a slew of new shops to browse. Hudson is often referred to as the Brooklyn of the Hudson Valley, but it has so much more to offer (although if you’re looking for that Brooklyn vibe, you can definitely find it here). Fall is the ideal time to visit! This town is just 1 hour south of Hopewell.

Sightseeing

The island near Hudson is a gem in upstate new york. Buried on an island in the Hudson is bannerman castle and beneath the brittle body of the century old castle walls and thin hair of tangled vines, lie Civil War bayonet scabbards and the ashes of Irish linen bed sheets. Bannerman Castle is the remnant of a Scotsman's fortress -- built not as a home, but as an arsenal for his immense collection of weapons. Public access to this island has had a small window of opportunity, curtained by Native American and Dutch settler's fear of resident spirits and goblins, and then restricted since 1900 for more contemporary safety reasons.

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts. This 14,086-acre park, covering land in Putnam and Dutchess counties, boasts hiking trails, picnic areas, scenic campground, and abundant opportunities for boating, hunting, fishing, and birding. The park is also home to the Taconic Outdoor Education Center, which provides high-quality environmental programming and Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes 20 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Fishing by boat is permitted at Stillwater and Canopus Lakes. Fishing at both lakes and four ponds is excellent in all seasons for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch or brook and rainbow trout. Please note that all freshwater fishing requires a permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This permit can be obtained from town halls and many sporting goods stores. The scenic campground, formed along the park's natural rock ridges, provides alcoves of privacy and tranquility for campers. Each of the 80 campsites has a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring. Additionally, there is an area for RV camping. Although there are no hookups available or dump station, restroom and shower facilities are centrally located to all RV and tent sites. The campground's nature center houses environmental displays and a variety of touch boxes. Reservations for group camping are not being accepted at this time.

Moses Gomez, a Jewish community leader from New York City, purchased 1,200 acres with river access in what is now Marlborough, NY, near the current border with Newburgh. With his two sons Jacob and Daniel, the Gomez family amassed 3,000 acres by 1723. They built a fieldstone blockhouse on what was known as Jews Creek, to conduct trade and maintain provisions as an extension of their successful enterprises in Colonial New York. Gomez launched one of the Mid-Hudson Valley's earliest commercial ventures: operating mills and lime kilns on the property, then shipping the material to New York City markets. Gomez Mill House is a quick, very interesting trip if you’re visiting the Hudson Valley. Conveniently located in Marlboro, NY located right off Route 9w. Gomez Mill House is the oldest Jewish settlement in the US and has been occupied by 4 or 5 different owners over the last 3 centuries. The tours are short but very very informative!

Anyone interested in fishing? Black Pond is a nearby fishing Lake. Anyone who wants to go should consult with guides and other local resources before heading out to fish. They also ask that Anglers who are familiar with Black Pond are asked to submit reviews of the Lake. Not my thing but hey.....why not?
