The George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve is located in western Orange County, approximately 2 miles southeast of the town of Hillsborough. In the 1990’s, a subdivision was planned for a section of the property off of New Hope Church Road. George and Julia Brumley were passionate about land conservation and purchased the land to manage it for conservation and for traditional uses like forestry, farming, and hunting. After the Brumleys’ unfortunate passing, the Zeist Foundation sold the property in 2010 to Triangle Land Conservancy. Brumley was purchased with the help of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, the Warner Foundation, City of Raleigh, Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative, and the Pearson Stewart Land Opportunity Fund established through TLC’s Our Water, Our Land campaign.

At TLC’s 296-acre Johnston Mill Nature Preserve you’ll find many of the same natural attributes as you will at its bigger, better-known neighbors Eno River State Park and Duke Forest, minus the crowds. Take New Hope Creek, a two-mile stretch of which meanders through the northeast portion of the preserve. Like the larger Eno, it has rocky sections reminiscent of a mountain creek as well as placid, reflective stretches. You can enjoy nearly the entire run of New Hope Creek on Robin’s Trail, the waterway’s constant companion.

Ayr Mount is a Federal-era plantation house built in 1815 in Hillsborough, North Carolina by William Kirkland. Kirkland, named the house in honor of his birthplace, Ayr, Scotland. Unlike the other houses in the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust collection, Ayr Mount looks deceptively simple, even austere on the outside. There are no soaring columns proclaiming its classicism. On the other hand, Ayr Mount is far grander – especially in the interior – than one might expect from a first look at the exterior.
