This Afghan restaurant is our go-to for romantic special occasions like an anniversary or birthday. They serve the best food I’ve ever eaten, offer a vegetarian version of almost anything on the menu, and have a well-curated wine list, all at a very reasonable price, with exceptional service, in a beautiful candle-lit setting. The description for the Kaddo Borwani May sound strange (pan-fried baby pumpkin with a yogurt-garlic sauce), but it is a MUST as an appetizer or side. You will DREAM about it.

Johnny’s is a great spot for brunch, lunch, dinner, or drinks. I love their cocktail menu, and their brunch menu has way more going on than the typical scrambled eggs (though, rest assured, those are there too). A bit pricey, but there are always vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options, and even a kids’ menu. Fancy food in a casual (but beautiful) atmosphere!

Atwater's is a favorite brunch/ lunch/ coffee/ tea spot. "Trust the menu", because it's all good. There's something for everyone, including plenty of vegetarian/ vegan/ gluten-free options. But best of all are the soups! I've never had a bad one, even if it's something I wouldn't normally go for. Don't skip the chilled gazpacho if it's summertime. Atwater's sells freshly-baked loaves of bread, pastries, and homemade jams, as well. Check out the many other great vendors in the Belvedere Square Marketplace, as well!

VEGAN. CHOCOLATE. TRUFFLES. Inside the Belvedere Square Market is a tiny stall with the most out-of-this-world-tasty chocolate truffles and confections, made by Jinji herself and her dad, or a member of her team. They'll seem pricey at first ($3-ish for a truffle, chocolate-dipped fig, or other treat), but once you eat them, you'll see that each one is an entire dessert in itself. I'm not completely vegan, so I don't go around recommending vegan options if they're not as good or better than their traditional counterparts. But Jinji truffles makes Godivas taste like M&Ms (not hating on M&Ms though!).

This world-renowned museum boasts the largest collection of works by Henri Matisse in the world. Let me repeat that: the largest collection of Matisses IN THE WORLD. Not to mention Renaissance Classics, American decorative arts, a large and impressive collection of African and Asian-Pacific art, modern art, and a fantastic Contemporary Art Wing. You'll see works by: • Raphael • Van Gogh • Manet • Degas (cast of "Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen"!) • Rodin (cast of "The Thinker") • Modigliani • Míro • Marc Chagall • Paul Cézanne • Georgia O'Keefe • Picasso • Andy Warhol • Robert Rauschenberg • Alice Neel • Jeff Koons • Kara Walker • Jack Whitten • Amy Sherald and many, MANY more! The BMA's new director has committed the museum to acquiring works predominantly by women, Black, and Indigenous artists. Bravo, BMA!

One of the best zoos in the country: the staff, keepers, and volunteers truly care about each animal's wellbeing, as well as their visitors' experiences. There's lettering on the walls of the Aquarium that reads "If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water", attributed to anthropologist Loren Eisley. You'll see the essence of that quote here as you gaze at stingrays, sharks, electric eels, rare and tropical fish, one of the biggest conservation efforts for poison dart frogs, and exhibits that recreate the aquatic habitat of certain parts of the world, from the Chesapeake Bay, to the Red Sea.

Fort McHenry itself is a cool site for history buffs: built during the Revolutionary War, the Fort and its flag's survival in the Battle of Baltimore, during the War of 1812, inspired Francis Scott Key's poem that became our very-challenging-to-sing National Anthem. "O!" say, can you see the barracks that held both tens of thousands of Confederate prisoners of war, as well as secessionist-leaning civilian political prisoners? Or the cannons pointed at both the Patapsco River, to ward off Confederate Soldiers from the South, as well as those pointed across the Harbor, at Baltimore City itself, as a way of telling Confederate-leaning civilians "don't even think about it"? It's complicated.

Hunting Ground is the PERFECT boutique: women’s and men’s vintage clothing in equal measure, plus new clothing, accessories, jewelry, and gifts from hard-to-find brands and local makers. Men, you will NOT be bored here. In fact, you may find your new favorite shirt or scarf. Prices are insanely reasonable, especially on vintage items: most are in the $15-$50 range. We’re talking $42 vintage Levi’s and $30-$80 dresses and leather bags. The best part, in my opinion? Unlike many boutiques, you are left to shop in PEACE.
