Where to eat in Playa del Carmen? The question that tickles every foodie’s brain. The food scene in Playa is amazing, with something for everyone’s taste. Expect innovative usage of ingredients, mouthwatering dishes, and more than affordable prices. You’ll discover new things you never tried before and be inspired to reinvent your own flavorsome dishes at home. My country is BURSTING with flavor! ✦ ☛WHAT TO TIP AT A RESTAURANT IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN? The amount of tip will depend on the type of restaurant. Some places tips are expected, and others you might offend if you leave a tip. Here is how to navigate the tipping customs at restaurants in Mexico. ✦ ☛SIT DOWN RESTAURANT✦ Waiters in Playa get paid very similar to those in the USA – very little. Waiters on average make $2.13 an hour and depend on tips. We try and tip 15% depending on how large the bill was and the quality of service. We would always suggest tipping a minimum of 10% at restaurants in Playa/Mexico. Make sure to check the bill and see a service charge for gratuity was included, several higher-end restaurants will include this on the bill. Suggested Tip: 150-170 peso bill= $2 or 30 pesos. 400 peso bill= $3 or 50 pesos. ✦ ☛LOCAL RESTAURANT✦ Some of the best food you’ll find in Mexico comes from small casual eateries full of local people. At these types of places, a 10% tip is customary. Avoid over tipping in order to fit in. Suggested Tip: 10% of the total bill. ✦ ☛FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS/COFFEE SHOPS✦ No need to tip at fast food restaurants or coffee shops like McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC, etc. If a server doesn’t come to your table no need to leave a tip. Suggested Tip: None. ✦ ☛TIPPING AT BARS IN MEXICO✦ How much to tip in Mexico at bars will varies bar to bar. If you’re at a beach club in Playa del Carmen or sit down place, gratuity will most likely be added to your bill and there is no reason to add an additional tip. We always suggest tipping on the first drink around 10 pesos and then see how the service is when you go back. If you find yourself sitting at the bar chatting with the bartender for a few hours and you’ve had a few rounds leave 50 pesos or so. How Much To Tip: $1 or 10 pesos for 2 beers. ✦ With some many great places to choose from, where do you start?
ALUX Restaurant, Bar and Lounge emerges within the depths of a natural formed cavern. The restaurant’s interiors have metamorphosed for millions of years to create the visual spectacle of countless stalactites and flowstones. Awe your senses as we delight your palate with our Fine Mexican and International Cuisine. The enigmatic energy of the ancient Mayans is felt everywhere in this Cenote Cavern. At ALUX, nature itself is the Star attraction. This place is SO cool! The restaurant is literally in a cave (aka: “cenote”) right outside of the downtown area. This place is off the hook! You walk down the stone steps into another world! The restaurant is beautiful with chandeliers and candles everywhere. There are stalactites on the ceiling and water falls with cool jazz music playing. We saw a few bats flying around as we explored deeper into the caves. BEST service we’ve ever had - very attentive and informative. The appetizers were delicious and really all the food was so unique as well as affordable. This is the most unique restaurant experience you will ever find and incredible ambiance!! Alux is a TOTAL must if you are on your honeymoon, Christmas, New Year’s or celebrating a special occasion! A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!!! HINT: You must make reservations with enough time (months) in advance - especially if it's a holiday season.

La Cueva del Chango is a unique restaurant-bar, not only in concept but also for the natural setting amongst abundant vegetation and trees. The culinary concept is natural Mexican food. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. All the juices are made with fresh fruit and they also have a bar with an ample assortment of premium brands. The wines they serve are mexican, thus offering an ample selection. In La Cueva del Chango they believe in the Mexican cuisine and offer a high quality product at a reasonable price. The breakfast special "steak and eggs with chilaquiles" is incredible. Their juices, french toast, mole sauce and home made tortillas are delicious and for dessert the crepes with cajeta superb! The food is authentic mayan style with a great atmosphere - a great combination to make your visit to the Yucatan extra special. It will transport you to a time when things were simple and rustic.

500 GRAMOS Grill is something different in the heart of Playa. Sitting outside and looking up you see the stars poking through the treetop canopy all thanks too the glass roof they have over their outdoor dinning room. A super place in Playa - off 5th Avenue. If you like steak (and even Italian) as Josie one of the owners is Italian you won’t be disappointed. Great relaxed vibe and very good food. The ambiance at night take you from the local street into a sophisticated steakhouse. The menu has a large selection of bites and the host brings by some samples of the different cuts of meat they offer. Delicious cheeseburgers with fries with the bun perfectly toasted to add that little crunch to the perfectly cooked burger patty. The steaks seasoned and cooked to perfection and beautifully presented, and the Caesar salad is truly the best!!! Amazing service!!! Owners are super friendly and they take their time for every customer. If you are in Playa and looking for a great dinner without the big price tag, look no further. Highly recommended!!!

PLANK Gourmet Grill & Patio Bar An unforgettable fine dining experience in the heart of Playa del Carmen, created by renowned gourmet Chef Juan Diego Solombrino. After his fascination with plank style cooking, Juan Diego decided to bring this creative gastronomic experience to the Riviera Maya. Cooking and serving their meals on Cedarwood planks and Himalayan salt blocks give their tantalizing dishes a spectacular aroma and infuse them with a mix of intricate flavours. They feature a gourmet family style menu including USDA certified beef, prime seafood selections, gourmet flatbreads and large shareable side dishes. Be sure to try the Scallop-Bacon-Apple appetizer, The Sea Bass entree, their signature creations including Cedar Plank Salmon or their Famous Beef Wellington or their tender Twin Baby Lobster Tails! They are also the perfect venue if you are celebrating a special occasion. We have been visiting IMPREVIST for breakfast and have always been impressed with the quality of food. Now that they are inside PLANK the menu has changed slightly but for the better! And I didn’t think it needed any changes or could get any better-but it is! There is pretty much something for everyone on the menu. Excellent brunch and evening meals. Great location and service. Would highly recommend!

Don Sirloin makes the best "Tacos al Pastor" (marinated pork and sirloin beef) - sliced right off the spit "Trompo". This place is legit amazing! The tacos are excellent! I personally love the Tacos al Pastor but the Sirloin is next level amazing. The salsas are fresh and the pineapple salsa is out of bounds with perfect spice level. Service is fast and friendly. Clean as well. HINT: We learned to order the meat by the kilo (better value) vs ordering the tacos individually made by the cook. They will bring the meat, tortillas and all the ingredients (cilantro, onions, pineapple, limes and salsas) so you can build your own fresh and delicious tacos. You will never forget the most authentic and very cheap Mexican taqueria experience!!! Located on 10th Avenue - across from Coco Bongo...just steps from our condo. A MUST TRY!

You may have already heard of this famous hole in the wall taco joint! It’s off the strip on more of a busy street and while the tacos are truly amazing and the margs are super cheap, beware that the vibes are nothing exciting! It is an authentic little taco stop but totally worth popping in for a quick bite and drink, if not to just be able to say you’ve been, because if you tell someone you went to Playa they will probably ask if you went here!

Argentinians are known for many things, and high up on that list next to football/soccer and tango is the quality of their cuts of beef. While you wouldn’t necessarily think of Argentinian food when traveling to the Mexican Caribbean, the region is actually home to a significant expat population. The result? At La Vaca Gaucha.

This Mexican chain has been serving up healthy options for over 30 years, long before it became mainstream. What 100% Natural lacks in a small business atmosphere it makes up for in terms of both quality and location. Situated in the heart of Fifth Avenue, you can indulge in some people-watching and some delicious yet healthy meals all in one sitting. That’s what we call win-win.
