Platanias is located in west Crete, just 11 kilometres west of Chania. Platanias is one of the most popular tourists resorts in Crete and is so close to Agia Marina that they have essentially merged into a single large resort. Platanias and Agia Marina may seem two noisy, bustling places and everything is much more intense, especially if you’ve just come from a less touristy part of Crete. You certainly won’t be bored here! A busy nightlife, bars, restaurants, a large sandy beach and countless hotels along the seafront are the basic features of Platanias, the main tourist resort of Chania Prefecture.

The harbor was built by the Venetians during their colonization in Crete and specifically between 1320 and 1356. It was an important center, serving the Venetian military ships, as well as one of the most important commercial ports of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. In the 16th century, due to a perceived Turkish threat, the harbor was included to the new fortification plans of the city of Chania. A fort constructed next to the entrance of the harbour and enhanced with bastions even on the breakwater. During the period of the Turkish rule, the port continued to be a trade center. Much later, the19th - early 20th century, the largest ships at that time, had to anchor outside the harbor and reach the pier by boat. Thus, the port gradually abandoned and used the large natural harbor of Souda, which serves the passenger and commercial traffic of western Crete until today. On the other hand, the old harbour of Chania hosts small boats and yachts, in its eastern basin.

The rampart Sabbionara still preserves its Turkish name "koum - kapi (Kum Kapisi = the Gate of the Sand), is located on the northeast corner of the Venetian walls and is completely constructed in the sea. On the front of the rampart, the circular Venetian emblem of the lion of Agios Marcos is still preserved. It is the only preserved gate today and its external side had been modified during the Turkish period.

Its construction started in 1924 and was completed in 1927 using river sand, one of the cheapest resources back then. It was designed by the local engineer D. Kollaris. To the right of the tower, there is the stadium of the town. Papandreoy itself is a street that throbs with activity being the main commercial street of Chania. Especially its northern side is dotted with upscale shops and receives hundreds of visitors during the day.

Tabakaria, situated in the rocky eastern region of Chania, is the district where, since the early 19th century, the tanneries for processing leather were located. It is a very atmospheric region, an architectural monument of the industrial age. The installation of tanneries happened between 1830 and 1840, during the period of the Egyptian Crete. The location chosen for the tanneries of Chania was the most appropriate: pretty far and yet near the city, in a place with abundant groundwater, brackish water, next to the shallow sea that was useful for the first stage of leather processing. During the 50s, there were more than 80 tanneries, while today only six still operate.

The landscape of Samaria The broader area of Samaria constitutes a clearly established and spatially defined territory. Within this area one encounters a diversity of landscape features with particular characteristics of ecological and cultural value, some of which are: The Gorge The village in the centre of the Gorge, with the old crops of the people. The chapels, which are often found on the same site as ancient temples. The castle above Samaria, and at the Gorge exit. The ruins of the ancient city of Tarra. The Gorge’s special biodiversity. The complex ecosystem. Both the Gorge and the broader Samaria region are powerful symbols. The occasional passerby through the Samaria landscape can powerfully comprehend its wild forms. The visitor is consumed by a sense of freedom, feels awe in front of the coexistence of such an inhospitable landscape with the presence of humans, senses the dominance of nature over man, and comprehends his or her inability to control the forces of nature. The local population feels a powerful sense of pride, strengthening the sense of the landscape which is deeply rooted within them, and constantly hammering out their character within the presence of such an imposing landscape.

Lake Kournas is the largest natural lake in Crete and is located in an enchanting landscape, between the west slopes of the White Mountains and the fertile plane of Georgioupolis. It is located near the village Kournas, 2.5km south of the beach of Georgioupolis, 43km east of Chania and 20km west of Rethymnon. Lake Kournas and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece, as the wider area of Apokoronas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. The name Kournas is believed to come from the Arabic word kurna for "lake" or "bath". In ancient manuscripts it is mentioned as Korissia, while it is believed that the area hosted a sanctuary dedicated to Korissia Athena.

Beach

The most famous beaches in Chania
The exotic beach of Falassarna is located 59km west of Chania city and almost 17km west of Kissamos, at the western base of peninsula Gramvousa. At the northern end of the beach there are the ruins of the ancient Grecoroman city of Phalassarna. Falassarna bay hosts some of the most famous beaches in Greece, which has been awarded as the best beach of Crete and voted as one of the 10 best beaches in Europe several times in the past. Falasarna spans a large area and consists actually of five consecutive beaches, with the two most central being the most favorite. The sand in Falassarna is whitish, making the water color tropical. Indeed, if you're lucky and be here on a day that is not blowing from the west (rare in west Crete) you will be enchanted by the beach and its turquoise waters. The main beach of Falassarna is called Pachia Ammos (i..e Coarse Sand). It is an exotic beach with a length of 1km and a width of 150m. This beach attracts the most visitors of the area, but because of its length it never seems too crowded. The beach offers umbrellas and a few snack bars and cafes, where you can get food and water. There are also services for water sports and beach volley courts. There is another long beach north of the main beach having a length of 800m, identical to the main beach, which is separated into several smaller beaches. This bay is divided in half by a sand dune and a few rocks. The beach is more quiet than Pachia Ammos and offers no facilities. Nearby, there is the chapel of Agia Paraskevi and a spring with fresh water.

A heaven on earth, Mpalos, is between the Gramvousa peninsula and the Tigani Cape, in the north-western side of Crete. Mpalos is about 56 kilometers from Chania and 17 kilometers from Kissamos. In order to visit it, you should take a small boat from Kissamos to Mpalos, or drive on a very dirt road that starts from Kaliviani, goes along the cape and ends near a path. After walking about 1 kilometer, you reach Mpalos. You will be in an area with a large sea lake with swallow water, white and pink sand and sea water in all the shades of blue. The blue-green and turquoise water and the morphology make the visitor to think that s/he is in heaven. The whole area has been under the Natura protected areas. Rare flora and fauna species are hosted in that magical place. Falcons, sea ravens and cormorants nest in the area and the Caretta Caretta turtles hatch their eggs in the warm sand of the exotic beach.

Stavros is a seaside village located 17km northeast of Chania, at the northernmost edge of Cape Akrotiri. One characteristic feature of the area is the very steep camel-shaped mountain Vardies rising opposite the harbor of Stavros. The mountain is famous, because there were filmed scenes for the film “Zorba the Greek”, where Anthony Quinn danced the famous Sirtaki Dance in 1964. Then Stavros was a humble small fishing village. Today the region has become a major tourist resort with many hotels and important tourist infrastructures. The two beautiful beaches of the area have contributed to the development of the area. The main beach is located east of the village, at the foot of the mountain Vardies, and next to the picturesque harbor. A semicircular lagoon is formed, fully protected by winds blowing in the region. The small bay has marvelous white sand and shallow turquoise water. The contrast of the wild mountain with the peaceful beach in the foreground makes Stavros a unique place for swimming. As expected, the beach is very well organized and provides all possible services. The second beach of Stavros is located north of the village, 200m northwest of the main beach. It has sand and rocks in places and is less organized than the first, but cleaner. The main drawback of this is that it is unprotected and the sea is usually wavy. At the peninsula dividing the two beaches of Stavros, you can see the remains of the ancient quarry, used for extracting limestone for building the Walls of Chania during the Venetian Era (13rd- 17th century). In Stavros you will find many more options rather than accommodation and restaurants, such as mini markets, shops, cafes etc. Moreover, there are bus services from Chania city.
