Food scene

Our favourite when we're in town. The Barley Mow is a 'proper' pub, popular with people who live locally. The staff and locals are friendly, so I'd hope a good option if you're travelling on your own. It's probably more of an Autumn/Winter pub as there's no garden (there's a covered outside space, mainly used by smokers). There's a quiz night, a local group who meet for French conversation, and plenty of board games to keep you occupied. Sunday lunch is good too (including vegetarian and, I think, vegan options). They have a set-up with a local pizza take-away and a Thai restaurant. Order in the pub and it's delivered to your table. Both options are good value (for Brighton!) and have always been consistently good food.

Brighton can be pricy to eat out. Anatolia has great food and plenty of it, at a reasonable price.

Away from the city

The great thing about Brighton & Hove is that it is a short journey to get out into the countryside. From our place it's 6-7 minute drive to East Park from where you can walk into Sheepcote Valley. If you're feeling energetic, it's only a 15-20 minute walk (and on your return, there're a number of pubs in Kemp Town to help you recover!). There're also buses to the Marina or to Woodingdean - depending on whether you want to start at the bottom of the hill or the top. The option to be out in the country on this east side of Brighton is not just limited to Sheepcote Valley. There're are plenty of footpaths that take you up on the Downs, to Ovingdean, to the South Downs Way and more. Grab a map (or 'open' a map) and go out with a picnic and explore. My favourite time is early summer when the poppies and wild flowers start to bloom: it's breathtakingly beautiful and I'm always amazed that this place is a hop and skip away from the city centre. When the beach is heaving and you want some space, go up on the Downs :)... http://sheepcote.org.uk/assets/applets/sheepcote_map.pdf https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/leisure-and-libraries/parks-and-green-spaces/parks-and-countryside

This is a bit further out but worth the journey (car or bus) for the walk out to the Chattri Memorial. During the First World War injured Indian soldiers were hospitalised in the Royal Pavilion, Dome and Corn Exchange. The Royal Pavilion was the first Indian hospital to open in Brighton. The Hindus and Sikhs who died were cremated on the Downs and, in 1921, the Chattri memorial was constructed on the cremation site. When the city has you frazzled and you want some fresh air and a place that to contemplate 'life', the Chattri is perfect. Regardless of your beliefs or faith, the Chattri is a place of stillness and stunning views. https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/leisure-and-libraries/parks-and-green-spaces/chattri-memorial
