Neighborhoods

We have listed two of Falmouth's 13 beaches, Falmouth Heights Beach and Woodneck Beach, under Neighborhoods, because the surrounding areas are worth exploring.
Bike the Shining Sea Bike Path four miles to Woods Hole. Largely original fishing village with marine scientific institutions, such as: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Marine Biological Laboratory, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric lab. Waterfront restaurants galore! Great seafood, excellent biking and walking neighborhood, free small authentic aquarium, and an exhibit center on School Street about the work of the institutions. Great coffee at Coffee Obsession. Ferry to Martha's Vineyard at the least expensive fare from here versus other ports.

Old cottages, large and small, include "gingerbread" style up the hill, close to a green where religious groups gathered in the nineteenth century and eventually built tiny cottages in the style of the time. Falmouth Heights Beach is close to town and has one food cart at .present. But Soprano's restaurant (at the former Casino) on the bluff above with parking and outdoor dining has delicious food and views.

For some beautiful sights, take Sippiwissett Road off Palmer Avenue/Route 28. Along the way, drive down Woodneck Road to Woodneck Beach - wonderful for exploring coastal marine life (especially with children). Sippiwissett Road, the "back road" into Woods Hole, runs parallel to the busier, faster Woods Hole Road and takes you by Eel Pond into the the center of Woods Hole Village. Sippiwissett is the neighborhood along the beautiful winding road with houses large and small, views of the marsh, and peeks of the bay beyond.

Lively at night and buzzing by day, Main Street features a large library and two of the Cape's best ice cream and candy shops. One, Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium, is over half a century old. Classic clothing stores like Puritan, Lily Pulitzer, and John's Shoe Store live on among many excellent boutiques such as Port Cargo and Maxwell's. Peg Noonan Park is the site of community events, and weekly outdoor family films in summer. The Falmouth Green, between the Episcopal and Congregational churches, has been the home of political protests for decades. Don't miss the six antique houses (Museums on the Green) and a tour of the home where Kathryn Lee Bates, writer of the song "America," grew up.

Extremely pretty area. Lots of fishing going on later in the day, but no promises. Most of Falmouth Beaches require a $20 parking fee until late afternoon, but you can walk (over a mile to the closest at Surf Drive) or bike from Deep Cove Cottage to most of them.

Another soft sand favorite beach, changing rooms and a good concession stand make this one an all-day favorite. The approach and surrounding area is beautiful as well.

Things to do

In summer, you can take a sailboat trip on Vineyard Sound among the Elizabeth Islands out of Falmouth Harbor. The schooner Libertie offers day and evening sails and sells alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages on board. There are also fishing boats. The Town Band plays a range of music on Thursday nights in Marine Park overlooking the Marina full of lighted yachts. The repertoire of the town band ranges from movie themes to classical, creating a great family, solo, or group activity. Falmouth's weekly Farmer's Market takes place on this same green on Thursday mornings. Try vegetables, fruits, and baked goods from our local vendors.
