Food Scene

It's a lovely unpretentious French Michelin starred restaurant, just 10 minutes walk from my home. I always go for the early bird menu which is €34 for three excellent courses. Lunch costs the same and is equally delicious. Check out www.campagne.ie for details of the early bird times and sample menues.

Drinks & Nightlife

I love Lenehan's as it's an old school pub, there since 1862 and in the same family since 1911 (I think?). There's a lovely ambience there. The landlady lives over the shop and is very friendly. Everyone knows each other there and it's a very friendly place to go for a quiet pint or two.

I love Billy Byrne's. I go to their movie night every wednesday at 8.30pm for an eclectic mix of non-mainstream movies. Willie, the owner, is a big film buff and knows his movies! They also serve lovely pizzas from the Bula bus on movie night for €8. On thursday night it is the sofa sessions in the back room with a very professional jazz outfit playing from 9pm til late. There's even a dance floor in front of the stage if you fancy a boogie! They have a restaurant standard menu on offer on Thursday to Sunday at very reasonable proces. So you don't really have to go all the way down town to be entertained when you stay in my place! They have gigs on at the weekend.

The Hole in the wall is my favourite place in Kilkenny city. It's off the High street down a gated laneway beside the Enable Ireland charity shop. The bar can only hold 15 people so everyone talks to each other there. It gets a lot of tourists but isn't touristy, if you know what I mean? They have music gigs on upstairs but it only holds 50 people, so you need to get there early to get a seat!

I don't go to the nightclub there but I believe it's great. There's a jazz session every sunday afternoon. A guy who teaches Swing dancing can usually be found there strutting his stuff, dancing with three or four women at the same time! It's worth checking out. He is mesmerising to watch!

Arts & Culture

Kilkenny castle is just a stunning building set in magnificent grounds that you can walk around. The tour is very extensive and very informative. A friend of mine, Shane, who used to be a barman in the hole in the wall is now a tour guide there and he loves his job. Being interested in history helps! So don't miss out on a lovely experience by visiting the castle. Go early, to avoid the crowds i.e. 9am or so!

I haven't been on the tour of the cathedral but I've been in it a few times and it is stunning! My friend Elaine, who used to be an IT consultant like myself in the 1990's is now a Church of Ireland minister and was based in St. Canice's cathedral for a few years before I came to live here. If you have the energy, climb the round tower for stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Essentials

Eurospar is a huge supermarket just 5 minutes walk from my apartment. It is absolutely spotless, has freshly baked bread and cakes in their bakery, a fresh fish and meat counter, a huge selection of takeaway dinners , made on the premises daily, and costing only €4. A huge off-licence with every beer, including my favourite Peroni and a good selections of wines and spirits. It's open from 7.30am until 9pm Monday to Saturday and closes at 6pm on Sundays.

Getting Around

The great thing about Enterprise is that they will pick you up wherever you are and bring you to their offices to get your rental car. A very handy service.

Shopping

Goods is a large old-style department store on the High street, near the Parade. It has lots of different concession stores inside and it's well worth a visit.
