My Favorite Restaurants

Visit the local restaurants to get the true flavor of this wonderful town.
Quirky local coffee shop (why go to the same chain that's in every town in the US?) with an indoor Koi fountain and good music. Popular with the High Point University students. Homemade muffins and other healthy snack options, including gluten-free items.

Two steps above a dive, Tipsy'z serves darned good food. It's been a local bar/restaurant for decades, (under different names throughout the years). They have the best Corn Chowder you've ever tasted, and the best burgers in town, if that's what you're hankering. The outdoor seating is always popular, although a little noisy, as it's off of West Chester).

Walk here from our place for an ice-cream cone or sundae. Mayberry's--yes, it is named after Andy Griffith's "Mayberry," as the TV show was based on his childhood town of Mount Airy, NC, about a 30-minute drive away. Ask the owner about the time the moose crashed through the plate-glass window.

Yet another long-standing restaurant. Everyone in here seems to know each other. Best biscuits you've ever tasted. While close enough to walk, you'll probably want to drive as it's on a slightly busier part of Main Street. Very affordable and recently renovated. Healthy options and great breakfasts.

Amazing restaurant owned and operated by one of our neighbors. The food is truly exceptional and prices range from under $10 to a little higher. Very pretty tea-lit outdoor dining area. About a 20-minute drive through the back-roads to Jamestown. Worth the trip. You can then walk across the street to The Deck to have a drink and listen to a local band.

While this started as an artisans' haven, Dot & Pearl began selling their homemade cakes in a back corner. Dot & Pearl have now become a local phenomenon serving the best cake you've ever tasted.--Honestly. It's amazing.--Cute little cafe atmosphere. While there be sure to walk through the stalls. A lot of the furniture in my house comes from The Market craftswomen, and all of my soaps come from Jennifer's stand, "The Wash Bucket Soap Company." I've never met her, but love her products. They smell heavenly, are nice to my skin. and she makes them one town over in Thomasville.

Been here forever. You can get a BLT for $3.50 cash. Seriously! Not fancy, and mostly locals, but if you're in the mood for some old-fashioned simple eating, this is the place to go.

You'll be drawn to our neighborhood craft brewery when you see the locals relaxing at the outside patio. Comfortable seating with community tables or couches, and dog friendly, it's easy to start a conversation with your compatriots. My favorite part of Brown Truck is their choice of local singers, usually a blend of country, rock or classics. On a summer's night, while walking the dogs, I can hear a Jerry Jeff Walker tune wafting through the air. A different gourmet food trucks pulls up each night.

I hate to be a bad influence, but if you do crave a donut (or two), go to Granny's. No fluff, not a chain, and good donuts.

Gourmet pizzas and nice salads. Locally owned and operated. When you enter, a right-hand turn will take you to the restaurant. Turn to your left for the bar/restaurant. It has a nice atmosphere, a community table and booths. Good local vibe.

If you're staying in for the night and craving comfort food, take the back roads for a 6-mile drive down beautiful winding country roads to the Horneytown (yes, you read that right) Country Store. Choose one of The Pie Lady's Chicken Pot Pies, bring it home and bake it for one hour. It's as good as your mom used to make, about $7 for a one-person pie, with 4-person pies available. Perfect if it's rainy weather or you just want to stay in and chill.

While we have several good thai restaurants, this site, just 2.8 miles from home, is my favorite. Excellent food, reasonable prices and run by a local Thai family that always greets you with warmth. Good for eating in or taking out.

Best old-fashioned hardware store

This place always reminds me of childhood trips to the hardware store with my dad. Worth a trip just because its' so old-school. I come here even when there's nothing I need to buy.
About a 10-minute drive to nearby Archdale. Locally mixed birdseed, locally gathered honey, and the staff treat you like they've known you for years.

Hiking, kayaking, etc.

A plethora of options. North Carolina has to be one of the prettiest states in the country.
You can drive to the look-out site for a great view of Pilot Mountain (shown in our pics) or hike up the side. Lots of options for different levels of difficulty, but none too strenuous. About a 30-minute drive away.

My favorite spot for kayaking, but canoes are an option, as well. Twelve bucks for a single kayak (double-seaters are there, as well) for the day. You'll see egrets and hawks. We usually take a picnic and pull up next to each other near the shore to dine in the shade. Very relaxing and very pretty.

Tourist sites

There's one, and you can't miss it.
Yup. That's what it is. 1.1 mile down Main Street. Worth a selfie. It's listed in Roadside America as a place to see. My first thought when I moved here from LA and stumbled upon it, "What the heck is that?"

If you're a fan of this great jazz musician, you must take a look. It's kind of in the middle of town, with not much around it but furniture market businesses, but it's only a .5 mile walk/drive to our newest ice-cream shop, The Scoop Zone and our Penny Path Cafe and Crepe Shop, so you can take a break after visiting John.

Best library in all of North Carolina

If you'll be here for a few days, walk the less than 1 mile to our beautiful library. While we might all be reading on our laptops today, they have a great selection of paperback mysteries (3rd floor). It also has a great selection of non-English books, especially their French section!
