Food Scene

For elegant dining and potential political-star siting, Ella is a decade-old Sacramento restaurant that sits right where the streetcar rounds from 12th to K Street. Its décor exhibits what Selland calls a “rustic elegance,” with the rustic part mostly confined to the antique, distressed wood shutters found on Ella’s ceilings and walls. Ella offers a seafood-inflected starter menu and well-crafted entrees – New York steak, pork chop, sturgeon – that taste appealingly of wood smoke but would never set the culinary world on fire.

The name may sound generic, but dining here is an experience unlike any other. Since opening in 1991, The Kitchen has felt like a party from start to finish, hosted by the talented Chef Kelly McCown. Diners (celebrants are inevitably included) are encouraged to get up and walk around, maybe even peek into the kitchen to chat up the cooks.

Not only about the beer. Urban Roots started when Rob and Peter decided it was time to open the brewery they’d been dreaming of for a long long time. They wanted a place where they could express their love for the industry they’ve been a part of for so long. With Urban Roots, they hope to pay homage to all of the wonderful people they have met on their journey. People that showed them amazing beer and maybe more importantly showed them a good time.
