First visiting New Zealand in the 1970s for an exhibition of his work, he decided to make the country his second home and bought property on the Waikare inlet, east of Kawakawa. In 1998 with the help of the community he transformed the town’s public toilets into a work of art.

You can stroll along the riverbank to the spectacular Rainbow Falls, where the water tumbles into a popular swimming hole surrounded by native bush. The falls are also a popular destination for kayakers to explore.
Good walking tracks give easy access to the most spectacular attractions of the forest: the giant trees named Tane Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere, Four Sisters, and the Yakas Tree, as well as the historic Waipoua Forest Lookout Tower.

For those of us who are thrill seekers …. try Sand-surfing, its totally exhilarating, and very fast. You can hire sand boards on site. It is best to do this as these boards are specifically designed for sand, are easily controlled and can slide fast down the slopes.

Their largest puzzle is the 'Amazing Hedge Maze', which is open all year. They also have many marvelous walks. Make a fun day of it and bring a picnic lunch to eat on their picnic tables

From top of Mt Camel (aka Mt Houhora, aka Mt Tohoraha). You'll need to catch a boat and then climb it, but it's pretty easy to hitch a lift with a local.
