Rokin
The buildings on Rokin used to be near the water, but this last section of the Amstel River was drained in the 1930s. A Persian rug store and an art dealer were initially located here. In 2003 the building was vacant and was squatted twice in a year. It has since been renovated, but has retained its distinctly crooked shape.
Quite a gory scene this. It depicts three meat inspectors around a butchered cow. On the left side a butchered sheep. Originally this gable stone was located in Sint Pieterspoortsteeg. On the ground floor of a now demolished church was a large meat hall where the inspectors' guild convened. The stone was moved in 1944 and restored in 2008.

This tiny church, surrounded by high street shops, offers a silent refuge from the busy Kalverstraat. It history goes back to the 17th century and the aftermath of the Reformation, when it was founded as a conventicle where Catholics could convene in silence. It was located behind a bird shop, hence the name "De Papegaai" (the parrot).

A great botanical garden! The bonatical garden of Amsterdam University opened in 1638 and has over 4.000 different plant species. This quiet and isolated green paradise was a centre for study and innovation. Take the first plant of the widely distributed Brazilian coffee: it was bred in the Hortus, after arriving in Amsterdam from the Middle East in 1706. The rare Victoria water lily is another eye-catcher.
