Eight counties can be viewed from this spot – Carlow, Laois, Kildare, Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and the mountains of Tipperary, and on a clear day the coast of Wales, to the east. On the lower side of the road, you will see an alignment of nine small stones in the ground. The Barrow Way follows the towpath, originally a path constructed alongside the River Barrow to allow the pulling of barges or boats for transport. The ground is good throughout. The path offers much of architectural interest to the visitor – bridges, many arched, and pretty lock houses, some still in use. Many interesting historical features are located in close proximity to the river including castles, abbeys, old bridges and derelict mills. If you are walking the Barrow Way and would like to stay with us here in Rathanna we can, by prior arrangement, have you picked up and delivered to our door and brought back to the trail the following day. There will be a fee - nothing extortionate - we'll work that out before you get here. http://www.riverbarrow.net/barrow-way.html
