Restaurants, Cafés,

My favorite places to go out for coffee or something to eat.
Check out the bio market by local farmers on tuesday or friday morning at Rathausplatz / piazza Municipio. (In the winter it is on piazza Domenicani/ Dominikanerplatz) They sell vegetables or fruit of the season. Sometimes you can find fresh eggs and flowers and even honey, speck, bread and "Kaminwurzen": the south Tyrolean kind of Salami: you have to taste it if you eat meat.

Traditional South Tyrolean kitchen for a fair price. This is the place where my grandparents, and my grandparents parents already went to ;) And still, I find it tastes fine ;) It's an authentic place and especially in winter it can be very crowded. So best to book a table or go there early (11.30 AM or around 6,6.30 in the evening). Bindergasse 6, 39100 Bozen

I recommend this place together with our guests Jamie and Walter from the US. Beer made in Bozen combined with burgers, spare ribs and MEAT of all kind. This place is known for its Craft Beer. During summer time people enjoy the outside courtyard and some jazz jam session. There is a small dance venue too. This is a place loved by young people and crowded on friday night. So this is the place to meet and greet Bolzano ;) Andreas-Hofer-Straße 30, 39100 Bozen

Most of the bars in Bozen offer a nice drink in the summer evenings. But this bar offers a little extra: delicious little sandwiches of every type. This together with the owner Franz made the bar famous amongst the locals :) It is located at Campo Franco in the city center under a ginkgo tree dating back the time of Queen Elisabeth of Austria. It s a hidden place. Nice roof top terrace with view on the historic city center and a good place for an aperitivo or two in the evening. But also nice for lunch or simply a coffee in the afternoon. I go there to read a book and to chill a little. A little more pricy than other places. Laubengasse 69, 39100 Bozen

Best cakes in town! Have a nice coffee or tea with Bolzanos sweetest dreams :) The probability to meet me here is very high. This hidden place is known amongst the local people. With a small playground, good wine and food it's a perfect place to hang out, taste some wines from their winery. You see it's a place where people still work and make wine. I find it very authentic and friendly. Nice little walk there! Weggensteinstraße 36, 39100 Bozen Sundays closed. Saturday opened for lunch Mon-Fr opened for lunch and dinner. They sell wine too!

Avalon is worth a walk. The homemade ice cream is a dream! It's not a big place to sit down. The ice cream is to take away. Made by a variety of ingredients, always fresh. Known and hidden places you should visit in Bozen
Maybe at first sight it's not the most impressive building. But please go in! At the end of the church at the right you find a little door...and you come to this painted chapel from the middle ages. A masterpiece to my opinion! Dominikanerplatz (6min walking distance from home)

Close to the Walther Square you can find the COS store. Nature in Bozen Town

Nice walks starting from the Rosa Residence
I often enjoy walking here in the afternoon or after office. Best sunset place in town. Get here by follow the Talferpromenade to its end and turn right. Shortly after, the hiking trail begins on the left side, which leads up with many serpentines. (I recommend good shoes and don't forget water!) At the top, enjoy the view from one of the many benches. Follow the trail back down to town. Quiet streets lead you back to the city centre. In the summer it can get very warm. Nice in the winter too.

Go for a walk at Bolzano's champs Elysées ;) Enjoy a walk under the shadows of the large trees, grab a coffee on your way, lay in the sun and enjoy the mountains and views on the old castles! How to get here: Exit the Rosa Residence, turn left, cross the street and get on the walking path, where you turn right. Turn right before the bridge. Now follow this path along the river, the Talfer. You will pass under two bridges. After the second bridge the park begins and on the right hand side the promenade with the big trees.

With the Bolzano Card, our guests can use the Renon/Ritten cable car free of charge, which departs every 4 minutes near Bolzano/Bozen railway station. In just 10 minutes you are in Oberbozen, from where you can go on wonderful hikes of all kinds. There is so much to discover here! We recommend a ride on the historic tram (free with the Bolzano Card) to Klobenstein and from there an easy 50-minute walk to the Feichtner, where in my opinion you can enjoy South Tyrol's best home-made Schlutzkrapfen (filled dumplings). Opened in summer. Closed on Wednesdays. Or as an alternative you walk from Klobenstein on the Earth Pyramids walk to Maria Saal. Very well made and easy trail. Look out for the Restaurant Egarter. Nice food. Not too expensive. Run by a local association. You can walk back to the tram and railway via the earth pyramids or take a dip in the water at Wolfsgrubner See. Attention: Ritten is called the sunniest place in South Tyrol. Prepare sun creme, water and a hat during summer!

The Salten is a legendary high plateau not far from Bolzano. The larch forests stretch for kilometres and at the same time there are alpine restaurant with wonderful views to stop for refreshments. There are many easy, short and long walks and hikes here. In winter, it's a dream with snowshoes! The Tschaufen is open all year round: an authentic restaurant with delicious cuisine. Try the Kaiserschmarren or, in autumn, the chestnuts with fresh must, the first wine of the year. Free of charge with the Bolzano/Bozen Card, best reached by bus in the direction of Jenesien and then Flaas. Get off at the Schermoos car park. From there, we recommend the hike to Tschaufen. An absolute insider tipp! Just 10mins with the train from Bolzano the Trostburg offers a travel back in time. Here lived one of the most famous singer songwriters of the 14th century, Oswald von Wolkenstein. See an impressive architecture, some very rare paintings and art treasures! This is to my opinion one of the most beautiful but unfortunately one of the most unknown castles in South Tyrol. You can enter at 11AM, 2 and 3PM with a guided tour in German and Italian for a few € from Easter to October. How to get here: Get the regional train in direction Brenner. Get of at Waidbruck / Ponte Gardena. From here it's a 20min's walk (steep) to the castle. Bring goed shoes, water and food. ( I didn't see a restaurant) Via Burgfrieden 22, 39040 Ponte Gardena

Lake Montiggl is a wonderful place that I like to visit in summer especially in the morning or early evening. You can go to the Lido and use the swimming pool until 6pm. There is a path around the lake and several places where you can go into the water from the rocks. In the morning it is still quiet and meditative. You can rent rowing boats or stand up paddles at the Lido. There are also beautiful walks to the small Montiggl lake, where you can also swim and eat. Take the bus 131 or 132 to Eppan/Appiano, get of at the station of Eppan and from there another bus to the lake. Also a popular destination for a bike tour. A beautiful cycle path leads from Bolzano to Montiggl. By car ist round 20mins from home.

It's no the most crowded, stylish and fancy place. And we like it cause of this. Always enjoyed the food, the breeze, the simplicity and the view. Perfect on a warm summer day! Much cooler than the other mountain regions. How to get there: Bus 1 6 or 9 takes you to the Cable Car to KOHLERN / COLLE which leaves every 15minutes and is free for you with the Bolzano Card. From the mountain station follow the directions to St. Isidor. You can follow the street (not many cars) or a hiking trail. It goes mainly down ;) Very easy. After that we either go back to the cable car or walk back to Bolzano (round 1 hour) mainly on the road. Insider: for 6€ a day you can rent a place at their pool ;) For sure a calm alternative compared to all the crowded swimming places on the weekend.

Embedded in vineyards and mountains, this lake is always worth a little exploration. You can swim (we recommend the small place KLUGHAMMER) or just rent a Pedalò (Tretboot/ pedal boat) and enjoy the sun and nature. You can combine the trip afterwards with a wine tasting or dinner, there are lots of restaurants around. I heard that PANHOLZER is delicious. Reachable by car, bike an bus.

German or Italian???

In the cities like Bolzano, Italian will be the prevalent language. In smaller towns people mainly speak German. This bilingualism roots in 1918, when World War 1 ended. Till then South Tyrol was a part of Austria.
