    Shoba2019-09-26T00:00:00Z

    Michael2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Piękny, dziwaczny, wspaniały dom. Kochamy to. Pakiet Steam w Isle of Whithorn (3 mile dalej) dobre jedzenie i piękny wybór piwa i wina

    Lisa2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Byliśmy tu bardzo wygodnie i jesteśmy zadowoleni z naszego pobytu. Dom został gustownie odrestaurowany i wyposażony w zabytkowe meble.

Welcome to 4 Laigh Isle, our self catering holiday chalet on the Isle of Whithorn, which welcomes visitors to the beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway. The Isle of Whithorn is the most southerly tip the Machars and of Southern Scotland. Yvette and I bought the chalet in July 2018 after staying in it , loving it and everything about it. We fell in love with the area and its history and beauty It's a fact The Isle of Whithorn is just magic.
The Isle of Whithorn is a gem of a historic village and seaport, the harbour is set around with mostly Georgian houses, built on the causeway that originally led to the island. Sit outside the Steam Packet Inn with a glass of wine or their own brewed ale and enjoy the ambiance and a little Isle of Whithorn 'magic' will cast it's spell on you. Our holiday chalet is just a few hundred yards away from the sea with lawns to the front and rear and parking by the side. The two bed chalet is very comfortable, quiet and perfect for a relaxing holiday. The chalet is fully equipped and has speedy WI-FI. There is so much to see and do in this area of Scotland from walking sandy beaches to visiting exotic gardens, historic castles, ruined abbeys and stately homes, to golf, walking or just exploring the rock pools or enjoying a meal that someone else has made for you. We accept well behaved children and well behaved dogs, max of two depending on size, oh and their (well behaved) owners too. Please inform us at the time of booking if you are bringing your furry friend.
We recommend that visitors reserve a table at the Steam Packet prior to arrival, as it can get busy especially at weekends, dogs are accepted in the bar area and the conservatory. The post office and shop is a great resource for milk, papers and cards etc, next door the cafe in the hall serves freshly cooked breakfasts and more but both are open limited hours. Nearby Whithorn has a Costcutter and a few nice cafe's including the visitor centre cafe. Larger supermarkets are at Newton Stewart. Isle of Whithorn, with it's pretty harbour, is the site of the ruins of St. Ninian's Chapel, walk from the harbour passed the memorial to The Solway Harvester, the Tower and pretty coves to the chapel.

I najprawdopodobniej wróci!

  • Odległy przytulny dom wee otoczony ciekawymi krowami.

  • Świetna cicha lokalizacja, nieskazitelnie czysty i oczywiście bonus do wanny z hydromasażem.

Fantastyczne kilka dni odkrywania pięknych spacerów i relaksu w domowym i komfortowym otoczeniu.

    Hannah2019-04-12T00:00:00Z

Isle of Whithorn is one of the most southerly villages and seaports in Scotland, lying on the coast north east of Burrow Head, about three miles from Whithorn in Dumfries and Galloway. The village is the location of the long ruined 13th century Saint Ninian's Chapel, previously a chapel linked to Whithorn Priory and a stopping off point for pilgrims landing on Isle Head and making their way to Whithorn. No longer a true island, John Ainslie's maps as late as 1782 and 1821 show the Isle as an island. The main street was originally a causeway, with the harbour located on what was then the true Isle. For years visitors have come to the Isle to behold the picture postcard view that has made a fortune for film manufacturers and the holiday snap business. Designated an outstanding conservation area, the graceful crescent of shore and neat houses that make up the harbour presents perfect proportions in any camera viewfinder. A haunt for smugglers, and a principal harbour for legitimate trade and transport - here you caught the Countess of Galloway, the steam packet which would take you to Liverpool and maybe a passage on an emigrant ship to the New World or Australia. St Ninian's Cave Through Physgill Glen, on the Solway shore south of Whithorn, St. Ninian’s Cave is said to have been St. Ninian’s retreat and although no evidence has been found there is no reason to doubt the connection. In 1871 an incised cross was found and excavation in 1884 revealed a number of crosses now removed to the Historic Scotland Museum in Whithorn for safe-keeping. The Catholic Diocese of Galloway annually holds a pilgrimage to St. Ninian's Cave on the last Sunday in August. There are also youth pilgrimages and a Christian Aid walk to the cave. This lovely harbour cottage dates back to 1790 and is in a wonderful position overlooking the sea with views to front and rear.
The old cottage is fully refurbished yet retains the charming original features including beamed ceilings and an open fireplace. An extension finished in April 2019 offers more modern facilities to the rear. The overall property offers one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, both with front sea views, a dining room and living room, again with front sea views. The modern kitchen is to the rear with the adjoining breakfast room having french doors opening onto the charming patio. The third bedroom, a double, again has french doors to the patio. One bathroom is on the first floor with a bath and overhead shower, and the second bathroom on the ground floor, a full wet room. From the patio, up a few steps, is a lovely enclosed organic garden with garden furniture and barbecue. Facilities include washing machine, dryer, microwave, and TV with built in DVD.
This historic and very picturesque fishing village lies at the most southerly tip of the Machars, between Luce and Wigtown Bay. It is most famous for the ruined 13th C St Ninian Chapel which stands on the hill. There are excellent local opportunities for salmon, trout and sea fishing as well as sailing and boat hire. The local golf clubs make guests very welcome and magnificent coastal walking can be enjoyed. The cottage is a few minutes walk to the local pub/restaurant which boasts lovely food, wines and real ales. A new cafe/gift shop houses the local post office and a fish van visits once a week, on a Tuesday, with a beautiful selection of freshly caught fish seafood. Local shopping can be done in Whithorn, 5 minutes away by car or in Wigtown or Newton Stewart. The Swallow Theatre, a restored and converted byre, just outside Whithorn, offers seating for 48 people. It offers a range of high quality productions throughout the year.

A traditional Period Cottage with magnificent sea views, PEREGRINE Cottage sl. 2-4 (on LEFT of Pic1) offers the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful, unspoilt SW Scottish peninsula. With great sandy beaches bathed by the Gulf Stream, beautiful flora and fauna, dark skies at night, PEREGRINE Cottage is also conveniently close (1 mile) to the award winning SteamPacket Inn, popular for its choice of ales & good pub grub. Travel writer D. Wills described this area as "an overlooked corner [of Scotland] whose time has come." So, keep right on trend! Come and discover the southerly tip of the Scottish peninsula before everybody else does ... and prepare to be amazed!
The area is well-known for its lovely sandy beaches at low tide (i.e. Monreith ; Rigg Bay) and amazing walks (coastal walk just across from Morrach ; St Ninian's Walk ; Kilsture Forest.) Amongst the best local attractions are, to name but a few: Wigtown National Booktown & Farmers'Market, Creetown Gem Rock Museum, Laggan Outdoor Centre with one of the longest Zip Wires in Europe, the Cocoa Bean Company and Cream of Galloway (Ice-Creams) both in the artist town of Kirkcudbright. Logan Botanic Garden is well-worth the detour for its sub-tropical ferns alone + there is a plethora of excellent gardens open to the public from Easter onwards, due to our Gulf Stream induced, mild micro-climate. Here you will be able to enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the U.K, use one of the 7 Stanes cycle tracks with routes for all abilities in Kirroughtree Forest, or simply RELAX & sample fresh, delicious seafood from any of the quaint little restaurants hidden in the many remote fishing villages dotted along the coastline. Longhill is a rural getaway, surrounded by farmland, yet only a few minutes drive from the nearest town of Whithorn. It also boasts a number of beautiful beaches and walks on it's doorstep, plus charming harbour towns and Scotland's National Book Town, Wigtown. There are plenty of places to explore and visit, or you can simply cosy up by the fire, have a ping pong tournament, nap in the sumptuous beds, read in the garden. There are films, games and super fast fibre optic broadband.
Longhill is a working farm, surrounded by arable fields, yet only a few minutes drive from the Royal Burgh of Whithorn. It's a traditional farmhouse with a lovely spacious kitchen which is well equipped with the essential crockery, utensils and cooking equipment that you might need. There is a dishwasher, induction hob, microwave as well as everything else you would expect. In a utility room off the kitchen you will also find a washing machine and freezer. A high chair and plenty of melamine/plastic dining sets are also supplied for our youngest visitors. The sitting room looks out over the large garden at the front and has plenty of comfortable seating, set around an open fire (logs provided). There is a smart tv for your entertainment. A games room hosts a ping pong table for those inevitable rainy days, as well as a second tv with DVD player which is useful for children! There are also books, board games, toys and DVD's. In the hall there is a small desk if anyone (God forbid!) might need to do some work. Otherwise it is home to all the info you might need on the local area, with a map for the region on the wall above. Upstairs the three bedrooms are all large, light and airy, with top quality bedding and bed linen. There is a twin, a kingsize and a luxurious, expansive super king for the ultimate undisturbed sleep. Alternatively the superking can be split into two singles. In each bed you will slip between Egyptian cotton sheets and sink onto a sumptuous mattress topper for a deep slumber. Each bedroom has their own hair dryer, plenty of storage for clothes, a mirror and waste paper bin. A large bath sheet and small hand towel are provided for each guest. The bathroom contains a shower over a bath. Soap and loo roll are provided for your arrival.
Longhill is a couple of minutes drive from the Royal Burgh of Whithorn which has a local shop, Costcutter, post office, pharmacy and petrol station. An excellent butcher and fish van also come to the town once a week, plus cafes and a take away shop with fish and chips etc. On the door step there are numerous walks, cycle routes and beautiful beaches to choose from, and an abundance of wildlife to spot. Among a handful of pretty harbour towns, all a short drive away, is Scotland's National Book Town, the charming Wigtown which hosts twenty book-related shops including Scotland's largest independent book shop. The annual Wigtown Book Festival takes place at the end of September for ten days. Come and enjoy the slower pace of life and discover the picturesque Machars, a largely undiscovered treasure in South West Scotland, you won't regret it!

The Drill Hall in Whithorn, in the Machars region of Dumfries & Galloway, is a former Cameronian church turned WWII 'Dad's Army' drill hall turned Council storeroom. In the mid 2000s it was transformed into the stunning home that we are now delighted to share with Airbnb guests. Whithorn is near the site of St Ninian's arrival, reputed to be the first to bring Christianity to Scotland. The light on hills and sea is remarkable, the people friendly, and historical/archaeological sites abound.
Our house is spacious and peaceful. Your hosts are a Bostonian (Catherine), who is an international charity development consultant, and marketing, communications, and PR consultant/former hotelier (Julian), who is now living his dream as a writer. We moved to this amazing house in late 2016. The Machars is attractive to pilgrims, artists, walkers, bird watchers, bikers, and anyone fascinated by the rich history of the area. Whithorn has a remarkable museum that incorporates a newly created Iron Age round house and a display of Celtic crosses only matched by Iona's. We are close to the official Dark Sky of the Galloway Forest (about 20 miles) but in the next village is the Galloway Astronomy Centre which, from September through March, can show you the miracle of the Milky Way, the planets, and nearby galaxies through its 16" telescope. Just to the north of us is Wigtown, famous for its annual autumn book festival and site of the infamous martyrdom of the Covenanters in Wigtown Bay. Garlieston (6 miles from us) is where the D-Day Mulberry Harbours were developed. On the west of the peninsula is Gavin Maxwell's home (author of 'Ring of Bright Water'). You will find standing stones, lovely formal gardens (including Logan Botanic Garden and Castle Kennedy), footpaths ... and did we mention the views? We often hear that this area is like Cornwall but without the people! Because we are on the Gulf Stream, the climate is moderate. We rarely have frost, much less snow.
You will find grocery stores, the "Whithorn Story" museum, cafe, surgery, chemists, newsagent, and Post Office here. We have 3 ambulances, the fire station for the Region, and even a helipad for quick trips to the hospital! The ancient Priory in this former Royal Burgh has been visited on the Pilgrimage route by Kings Robert the Bruce through to James VI of Scotland (1st of England). There is an active Church of Scotland and a Catholic church. Episcopal services are held in Whithorn on the 1st Sunday of the month or you can go to the attractive church in Challoch, near Newton Stewart. Everyone is friendly and you'll find that a simple trip to pick up a newspaper may take quite a while because everyone loves a chat. We frequent the Harbour Inn in Garlieston (excellent fish and chips), the Pheasant (Italian) in Sorbie; the Steampacket pub with its stunning views from the Isle of Whithorn over to Cumbria, Wigtown Bay and the Isle of Man; the Bladnoch Inn with its Fish Fridays and situated across the street from the Bladnoch distillery, the most southerly in Scotland. We will be collecting more recommendations as we dine around the region. Haute cuisine it's not, but local meals are reasonably priced and cheerfully presented.
