“Roberts House is an important example of the middle class British Colonial Style villa built in the late nineteenth century. It is a National Monument and an exotic immigrant to the Last Outpost of the British Empire nestled in a green oasis of indigenous trees. The Roberts family’s daughter Esther was born here and grew up to be the first female social anthropologists of the then Colony of Natal. She was well known as a librarian, author of research papers and books dealing with the indigenous population, and as a confidant and friend of Killie Campbell one of the doyens of Africana collectors in the country. Her large collection and library is now linked to the University of KwaZulu-Natal.”

“Cheap entry fee and interesting exhibits. It is in the harbour, which looks quite rundown, but its a fun outing to fill an hour or two. Please note that you climb on and off the boats, so not such a good idea in the rain, and remember shoes if its hot because the deck's get really hot in summer. ”

“More recently, it also served as a canteen and recruitment centre during the two World Wars and then later as a library, before being converted into Durban's biggest history museum. It boasts two floors of exhibition space depicting aspects of the region's early history.”

“The Sunken Garden offers beautiful floral shows, updated seasonally. This ever-changing display is as artful as it is fragrant. Perfect for a romantic walk or a curious exploration. Enjoy amazing azaleas and festive poinsettias in winter, multicolored tulips in spring, prized roses and geraniums in summer and cheery chrysanthemums in autumn.”
