There are two reasons why people flock to Costa Rica - the beaches and the wildlife and Casa Colibri has both!

A peaceful oasis nestled amidst beautiful palms and local fruit trees. It is a 20-minute walk, or 2-minute car ride to the centre of Samara and a 15-minute walk to Samara beach. The house is also a short walk to Buena Vista beach and the secluded, “Secret Beach”. This beautiful 3 bdrm, 3 bthrm home features a stunning pool and patio, large indoor living space with a modern kitchen.

There are two spacious bedrooms in the house and a third in a separate building next to the pool. All are equipped with ceiling fans and air conditioners to make for restful sleeping. You can greet the beautiful Costa Rican morning when you stroll directly from your bedroom to the pool through the large, wall-width sliding glass door in each room in the house. Bedrooms are located at opposite ends of the main house for added privacy. The third bedroom is located in its own cabina with a private bathroom and air conditioning next to the pool, beside the house.

Bedroom one features a double bed with a memory foam mattress. The ensuite bathroom boasts a large, open shower with a rain shower head. Bedroom two features a king-size bed with a deluxe, green tea infused memory foam mattress. A full bathroom with a shower is located directly next to the bedroom. Bedroom three (the cabina) features bunk beds custom-made from local wood by an area craftsman. The cabina has its own two-piece bathroom.

As soon as you walk into the large main room, you will be struck by the large, 17’ ceilings, which allow for better air circulation and make the room feel bright, airy and open. The beautiful design of the wood ceilings create a jungle-like feel complimenting the outside environment.

The space features built-in sofa with custom-made cushions and a sofa bed in the seating area. Kick off your sandals and relax here after a long day of taking in the local sights, or gather in the mornings to plan the day’s adventures! In the middle of the room is the hand-made dining room table, constructed out of local wood by an area artisan.

The bright, modern kitchen includes a breakfast bar with stools, granite countertops, custom tile work, and all the amenities you will need to cook a gourmet meal during your stay.

Across the back wall is a huge 10’ sliding glass door opening onto the backyard patio and pool area.

This is the part of the house we first fell in love with, and we think you will, too. Grab your morning coffee and step out into the natural beauty. Sit beneath the covered patio and watch as the hummingbirds (or colibri in Spanish) flit from flower to flower.

On warm days or nights turn on the outdoor ceiling fan to stir the air as you enjoy your time in paradise.

You’ll love the swimming pool with its custom tile work and underwater lighting. A refreshing dip is just what’s needed after a day at the beach. The deep end is 6’ deep.

Around the corner you’ll find an outdoor shower, so nice to cool off on a hot day if a jump in the pool isn’t what you’re in the mood for.

There are multiple sitting spaces around the pool, whether you feel like soaking up some sun or relaxing in the shade.

In order to encourage conservation and to allow us to keep our nightly rates lower there will be an additional electricity usage charge that our property manager will add based on a meter reading when you check out. This is to allow us to keep our rental rates low and to encourage energy conservation. The AC units are the primary driver of this cost. With moderate use of the AC units, this charge will likely be $10-$15 per day and you will have the ability to manage this cost if it is a concern for you.

Sámara, Guanacaste Province, Kostaryka

The Buena Vista neighbourhood is one of Samara’s most beautiful areas. Located just a few minutes out of “downtown” it combines proximity to the action with the peaceful, natural beauty Costa Rica is known for. There is also a turtle refuge nearby and there are hiking trails in the hills above only minutes from your doorstep.

Kitty corner to the house is a local soda that is renowned for having some of the best food in all of Samara, Soda La Samarena. Sometimes we run across with plates from the house and have them loaded up with local delicacies to take back and eat by the pool. The owners also run a bike rental business should you wish to explore the area on bikes.

While Playa Samara is only a 10- to 15-minute walk away, equally nerby are two other beaches. The “Secret Beach” is located a short walk up behind the soda/bike rental. Follow a beautiful jungle path that ends at some stone stairs ( a little steep in places) that lead down to a stunning, secluded cove. Follow the main road past our house for 15 minutes (on foot) and you’ll arrive at Playa Buenavista. Signs warn of crocodiles in the estuary, but we’ve never seen them and we’ve seen plenty of local kids playing in the water there. Continue to the far left point and, over a small rocky perch you’ll come upon the most beautiful, remote inlet. Not great for swimming because of the rocks, but stunning to sit and watch the waves.

If you don’t want to go right into town, there are also a couple of small supermarkets and restaurants along the main road that are walkable and bikeable from the house.

The Lonely Planet describes Samara as the “black hole of happiness.” People arrive and never leave. The lure of the beautiful surroundings, vibrant community, and wonderful people is certainly what convinced us to buy a house here. Samara features many amazing restaurants, cafes and shops. Whether you want to dine on the beach, listening to the waves, venture off the beaten path to find a hidden gem, or grab a drink and watch the game at the local sports bar, Samara delivers. Dozens of quaint little shops pepper the main drag and side streets.

The beach at Samara is simply stunning. Long and deep, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, playing volleyball or soccer. It is, in a word, paradise. There are several places on the beach and in town to rent surfboards and take lessons.

You can also rent kayaks to paddle out to Isla Chora, a small island just offshore. Once on the island, you will discover a secluded beach with amazing views back to Samara and the mountains behind it.

If you like horseback riding on the beach, there are several places to rent horses. There are also local guides and boats you can rent for fishing expeditions. We highly recommend taking a dolphin tour.

There are numerous places in town to book tours and rent quads, golf carts, and even an Alamo car rental.

Casa Colibri is our little piece of paradise in paradise and we hope you will love it as much as we do. Space tends to fill up quickly, especially during peak months. Use the booking tool on this page to get a quote and contact us if you have any questions about the place. Pura Vida.

Greetings from Kerry & Michael! We live in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, with our two children. Kerry is a teacher and Michael works in marketing. We first visited Costa Rica on our honeymoon and fell in love with the country. We've been back many times since and finally made the leap to purchase our own little piece of paradise in 2019. We fell in love with Samara when we first visited it back in 2009. We were on a month-long stay in the country with our kids and after three weeks in Montezuma, we decided to spend the last week on a whirlwind tour up the Nicoya Peninsula into the highlands. Samara was one of our first stops We only stayed a couple of days, but it made an indelible impression. The beauty of the beaches, the vibe of the town, it just had a certain something and it has stayed with us over the years. That's what made it tops on our list when we started looking at properties. We looked at a lot. Some here, some surrounding areas and even on the Caribbean coast. When we first looked at Casa Colibri, it gave us that same feeling that Samara did the first time we visited and we knew this was it. Both of us love the natural beauty that Costa Rica offers. We love dining out and looking in shops, but neither of us likes to feel the cramped nature of being in town all the time. For us, Casa Colibri offered that perfect balance of being outside of town and feeling like you were "away from it all," while still being close enough that we could quickly be there when we felt the urge for a little excitement. The proximity to not only Playa Samara, but also two other beautiful beaches - including one neighbourhood residents call "the secret beach" was also a huge plus. The biggest thing, though, was just the feeling we got by being here. It's relaxing, beauty with hummingbirds and fruit trees throughout the property. The pool is an amazing plus on a hot day (and aren't they all). We also love the outdoor shower. The high ceilings and amazing woodwork also took our breath away. It's really just an amazingly well designed and built house.
