Roccalvecce is one of those places most of us only read about. A medieval village about an hour north of Rome by train, it is the perfect getaway to relax and a base to explore the uncrowded sites, rich history, and natural beauty of this little visited area of Italy.
To say the least, we loved our time in the village. We spent five wonderful weeks there and are already planning our return trip. If you are looking to get away from the hectic and overcrowded sites of Central Italy this is the place.
But there are trade offs:
A car is required to get to and from the village.
Roccalvecce is a small town and does not offer all of the amenities that many of us have come to expect. For example, there is a small grocery store in the town, only a one-minute walk from the front door, with excellent local fruits and vegetables, but has a limited selection and hours so you have to plan your shopping. There are larger stores with longer hours in the nearby towns.
The residents of Roccalvecce are friendly and never fail to greet you, but few speak any English.
The house is nicely furnished, and has a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, and everything you need to prepare meals at home. Linens, towels, everything is provided and there is a clothes washer and a clothesline. Alexandra the owner, and all around wonderful person, has done a beautiful job decorating the house, so it is idyllic and comfortable.
The stairs to the bedroom are steep, but they lead to a nicely sized bedroom. The only bathroom is upstairs off of the bedroom. However, one of the best views from the house is from the bathroom window, which overlooks a park-like area below the village. The bathroom is totally modern with a shower and bathtub, toilet and bidet.
The house also comes with high speed Wi-Fi and a local cell phone to which you can add minutes at most Tabacchi shops, giving you a local Italian cell phone number. The WiFi was fast and reliable.
There are many things to love about Roccalvecce but if you are looking to be in the middle of the action this is not the place for you. On the other hand, if you want to relax in a small, out of the way medieval village, this just may be the ticket. Though lacking in typical touristy conveniences, this is the kind of rental that allows you to experience true Italian life.
Then there are the owners/hosts Alexandra and Maurizio. They are wonderful and were always willing to go out of their way to help with anything we needed. They are some of the nicest people we know and are a large part of why we will be returning to Roccalvecce.
In sum, the Roccalvecce house was everything we were looking for in an Italian vacation rental. We cannot recommend it highly enough.
