Charming cottage overlooking farmland. Many nearby hiking trails and nature preserves. Beaches, saltmarshes, farmland, and woodlands predominate in this town and townships nearby. Be chauffeured during peak season to a gated beach just a five minute drive away (no sticker required before June 15th and after Labor Day). Enjoy the quiet beauty of New England's best kept secret. Welcome to the South Coast of Massachusetts!

(Please note prices are higher in the summer; maximum of 6 adults is recommended - bunkhouse is best suitable for 4 children; pets count as guests)

This is a beautiful location overlooking an open field. Plenty of wildlife and fauna. Walking trails course through the field and across the street.

The cottage can accommodate six and the bunkhouse four. The bathroom on the first floor has a shower/tub. There is a "summer" bathroom comprising of an outdoor water pump, an outdoor shower, and a compostable toilet in a WC attached to the bunkhouse. NOTE: There is no bathroom on the second floor. I have provided for those of us who have to get up in the middle of the night but if going up and down stairs is a major problem, do consider staying in the bunkhouse which has no stairs.

Dining on the front porch is a treat. A large picnic table there can seat up to 10 people. You can cook on an outdoor grill and later enjoy a lightening bug show while toasting s'mores around a stone fire pit in the backyard.

Dostęp gości

In general, you have the entire property to yourself. If the bunkhouse is not being used, I may on occasion stay the night, with your permission, and will be respectful of your privacy, i.e. will not be using the main house in any way.

The caretaker is available June through Labor Day for rides to the beach at Round Hill. You can ride a bike or walk to the beach with no entrance fee or you can get day passes ($15 at the gate) for the weekdays. Only cars with stickers are allowed in on the weekends in peak season. Speak to the caretaker about scheduling your trips to Round Hill if you need them. He can also take you to launch sites for kayaking in Dartmouth or Westport. Gas and time reimbursement might be appropriate for sites five miles or more away. Use your judgment for those trips.

The kayak seats one, has a spare paddle and life jacket. It's designed for fishing but is great for solo exploring as well. Bring your camera for some awesome sunrise or sunset photography. The kayak is an ocean going type and as such is a floating device in and of itself. I tether my ankle to it and for extra safety wear the life jacket. This is my recommendation but in no way should you rely on me for your own safety. You should be experienced and exercise your own safety precautions.

There are six bicycles of varying sizes and types (an air-pump is in the station wagon and a hand pump in the shed). Please take good care of them, especially my Jamis touring bike that was "detailed" recently.

There are a bunch of beach chairs, an inflatable Zodiac style boat, and a large inner tube. WARNING!! I'm in the process of repairing some of those chairs, so test them out before taking one.

Feel free to use any of these items strictly at YOUR OWN RISK.

House Rules:

CLEAN UP for the next guests, PLEASE! The cleaning fee covers the cleaning of the kitchen and bathroom and light duty vacuuming but NOT the laundry and the general orderliness of the house. If in the unlikely event I cannot have a cleaning service on the day you leave, I will waive the fee and will have to rely on you for the cleaning of the house. You will know in advance if this is the case. If the house is not left clean and orderly, we reserve the right to assess you $50 to $100 depending on how much work needs to be done.
Beach and regular towels are available. Please WASH, fold, and put back in the bathroom and/or closet.
Ditto with the sheets. Please put into the dresser in the large guestroom.
TIP - You have to make up your own beds so you might want to bring your own sheets, towels, and/or sleeping bags. This will eliminate the need to do the laundry on the day you are leaving.
Please follow the recycling rules especially the one about using the town approved ORANGE TRASH BAGS. They won't take anything else whether we put it on the curbside or take it to the dump ourselves.
Smoke outside or on the porch, por favor.
There are various tools and machinery. Please lock them up in the shed if you think someone might use them or if you think they might be a danger to the guests.
And finally, Please respect the privacy of the neighbors. No loud parties! If dining on the front porch, keep it down after 11 PM. Don't leave pets alone in the house or on the front porch if they are barkers.

Thanks. Enjoy your stay!

Cruger's place is really great. Great value, great location. Cozy. The proximity to the beach is fantastic and it would be a great retreat for those looking for quiet. I gave it four stars because we had some issues with cleanliness when we checked in, likely the group before us and lack of time to get things tidy on the caretakers part. Cruger was very apologetic and responsive.

This place was great. Cruger goes above-and-beyond to make sure you have a good stay. There's a big yard and a wonderful outdoor shower, and the bungalow is a great home base to explore the surrounding area.

There's a lot to like about Cruger's little cottage. It's reasonably priced for the number of people it sleeps (6 in the cottage, 4 in bunkhouse), and what puts it over the top is all the extras you get - bicycles, firewood, backyard, screened in porch, beach access, beach stuff like towels, cooler etc. A word about beach access- the arrangement with the caretaker did not really work out- he was unavailable on most days to ferry us to the beach, so we had to get our own day passes. The cottage is older, but well stocked. Kitchen has plenty of pots and pans, cups, plates, paper-towels, dishwasher etc. Things like salt, pepper, oil are available, but the fridge may also contain the caretakers food, or food leftover from previous guests. One other annoying thing was the water heater pilot light kept going out, so needed to be re-lit several times a day. I believe it will be replaced soon. While the cottage is OK for older kids, if you have infants/toddlers, it may be a challenge. The stairs have no guardrails, and there's just too much stuff around so you have to watch the young ones constantly. There are free lending libraries nearby for little readers. The back yard is huge, dogs and kids will love running around and kicking a soccer ball. Beware of coyotes in the woods behind the property. We loved eating dinner in the screened in porch. We also enjoyed the a nice campfire in the evenings - plenty of firewood available for use. Round hill beach (free for walkers/bikers) is lovely but a bit too far to walk to (but bike-able). There are 5 working bicycles that are free for use. There is an ice-cream / burger stand up the road, 2 minutes walk. Plenty of hiking trails nearby- Cornell farms, Frank Knowles little river reserve and Lloyd center for the environment. Nearest major grocery chain is Stop & Shop about 20 minutes drive. Overall, great value for this region, this time of year. We didn't meet Cruger but he is very responsive, and accommodating. Thank you!

Odpowiedź od Cruger:
Still working out the kinks with the caretaker and his chauffeur service but I think it will work out. I am making sure he let's the guests know in advance exactly when he is available and if they will need to use their own car and buy the day pass. I reimburse the guests directly through Airbnb so no cash has to be exchanged. This service encourages guest to use the bikes which I think will be a positive experience. I am having a bike rack installed for those who don't want to make the uphill bikeride back to the house. And they can always ride in the wagon if they don't want to use the bikes. In the amenity section, I list all the things that I do not have for infants/toddlers and I have never represented that it is kid friendly for infants/toddlers. I don't think Vinod was saying this but I just want to make it clear that this was not the case. He is right that parents will have to child proof the house themselves if they bring very young ones. I am replacing the hot water heater through the MassSave program and I am pricing out the very expensive tankless ones which is taking a bit longer than I have wanted. Please bear with me on this. Thank you, Vinod, for such a thorough review that should be very helpful to future guests

It's so close to the beach, it was great. I went with three teenagers, and they only turned the TV on the very first morning while everyone was getting up and getting ready! I still cannot believe that they never turned it on again. I was amazed! We were there for a week, so we took advantage of the location to go to the beach a few days, we went to Salem one day, Newport, of course to Boston, and also to New Bedford for the Museum. We also were able to see Providence, Mystic and New Haven. We'd try to do a 1/2 day on the beach and a 1/2 day exploring. When the girls wanted more beach time, they road the bikes in the shed to the beach, and there were some good hikes that were nearby. There were some pretty good restaurants nearby, and some people in New Bedford had just opened it's own Escape the Room - called Mass Escape it was great fun for everyone, - so that and shopping and a movie theater, we had stuff to do in the evenings if we weren't player euchre around one of the tables. That area of the country has so much to offer, and so it was nice being located near enough to go to these places, and still near enough a beach that there was some actual relaxation too. It doesn't seem that big of a house, but, we were comfortable with three teenagers and one adult. A friend was passing through on her way to Maine and stayed one evening. It was OK, no one felt like going to the bunkhouse, but the couch was surprisingly comfortable too!

Cruger is very friendly and his place is charming, located on a beautiful piece of property. We appreciated the amenities, especially the records! He's got a TV with HBO, so no worries about watching Game of Thrones on our laptop. The fire pit out back was a special treat. I agree with others who said that Cruger gives off a quirky uncle vibe (not a bad thing)--his place is best for those who want to chat with your host! There was some confusion about the use of the beach wagon, but Cruger gave us a partial refund on the days it was unavailable. Appreciated his hospitality.
