PLEASE READ our listing descriptions before you decide to stay with us. They make it clear that our traditional mountain home is not for those who need AC and a TV, and that we provide a refrigerator and coffee station for our guests. Our guidebook recommends good, local eateries. We do offer 24/7 Wi-Fi, but James ("Woody") came unprepared to avail himself of it. We do not normally provide meals for guests. All this and much more is made clear in our listings.
We have learned from this guest interaction that 3rd party reservations are a red flag, and we will no longer accept any guest until we are sure that they know what we do and do not offer in the way of amenities.
If you can't sleep with open windows and the sounds of nature--the whisper of the creek, katydids and an occasional whip-poor-will--we don't recommend staying with us in summer, with night-time temperatures currently in the 60s.
Unfounded expectations cause disappointments. If he'd known our check-in window, Woody wouldn't have shown up 6 and 1/2 hours early, when we weren't home. If he'd known there was no TV, he could have come prepared with a book or a laptop, but he didn't. If he'd known there was no AC, he could have reckoned with cooling off outside in the heat of the day or opening the window, which I showed him how to do. There's plenty of shade and an outdoor shower, in addition to the pool.
The pool is professionally monitored for water quality. We take cleanliness seriously. There was some surface debris when I arrived (on time) for check-in, and it quickly cleared when I turned on the pump. The water is so clear that some liner discoloration shows--not a sanitary issue.
His private bath was thoroughly cleaned a few days before his arrival and not used after cleaning--we weren't home. What he found wanting we don't know. He never said.
He didn't communicate any needs after I showed him how to open and close the large, screened window that ventilates the Guest Room. He wanted it closed, and that's how he left it.
We keep our dogs out of guest spaces all the time. If you want to interact with our 2 little ones, you can do so in our fenced yard around the pool. Otherwise, we keep them in our private areas. Since we are pet-friendly, those with extreme pet allergies might want other accommodations, but thorough cleaning, excellent ventilation and air purifiers minimize this concern.
We are always available by phone or, mostly, if you just call my name. Otherwise, we respect your privacy, unless you want to socialize in common areas outside. which we did, briefly. In retrospect, I should have asked if all was well. I regret that I didn't, and in the future I'll be more solicitous (another learning).
I had no notice of any problem from Woody, and he was a good guest, as I said in my review--his 1st and only. Instead of letting me know he was dissatisfied, he chose to leave early--for family reasons, he said--and write a bad review, our 1st and only.
PLEASE COMMUNICATE, if you do stay with us, any problems or concerns. We'll do our utmost to make it better if you let us know. That's your opportunity as our guest, and our responsibility as your host, and we take our role very seriously.
