Co będziecie robić

We’ve made much about the nation’s founding fathers. But what about the women who also built the United States? Discover the lives of Philadelphia’s 18th and 19th century women who witnessed wartime and rebellion, abolitionism and slavery, activism and treason. We'll see the sites behind household names like Betsy Ross and Dolley Madison, and learn about figures like Sarah Mapps Douglass and Rebecca Gratz, leaders in their African American or Jewish communities. We’ll read the letters of a flirtatious Quaker teen-turned-spinster (and ask, why were they called spinsters?) and accounts from a fearless female soldier dressed in drag. These are complex histories. Some of Philadelphia’s early foundresses owned slaves—others were locked in bondage. Some were sex workers, and others society belles. So more than looking at markers and pointing out buildings, we’ll explore the context of “women’s work” in the shaping of this nation. Along the way, images and original words from diaries, letters, and newspapers will tell riveting stories. Join me, and let's discover the worlds of women in the city where America began.

I'm an avid history enthusiast, and Philadelphia's vibrant and complicated past, especially its untold and unknown stories, fascinate me. As a member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides, I love taking advantage its workshops and historic talks. And as a dedicated volunteer for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, I’ve spent hours diving into primary sources that tell the story of my city. In more than a decade of professional work in arts administration, I've led countless history-focused continual learning programs for libraries, historic sites, and museums. I'm excited to share what I've learned--the true and often unsung stories of those before me who once called Philadelphia home.

Gdzie będziecie

We'll see Christ Church and Arch Street Meeting House, where Philadelphia women would have worshipped and formed social relationships. We'll walk the grounds of the homes where Peggy Shippen charmed Benedict Arnold; where Benjamin Franklin's embattled wife Debby lived; and where First Lady Martha Washington dined while her enslaved servant, Oney Judge, escaped to freedom; and view many other sites behind compelling stories of women's history!
