Co będziecie robić
Seaweed pressing was a popular art form during the Victorian era when people summered on the coast and has a direct history to Newport.
We will be working at tables set up with seaweed filled trays to study the different species and speculate on collage combinations. Other materials are rag paper, blotter paper, towels, nylon cloth, cardboard and weights. Small tools, such as tweezers, scissors, toothpicks and soft bristle brushes are also used as needed.
Once the seaweed is positioned on the paper as desired, and the excess water removed, it is ready for pressing. The collage is transferred to fresh blotter paper with the nylon cloth placed on top to prevent sticking, then sandwiched into cardboard. The package is placed onto a flat surface and weighted down. The element of surprise is also a factor in this process and you won’t know what the end result will be until it is completely dry. The drying time is usually a couple of days to a week and you will leave with your pressing to continue the process at home.
Other things to note
In this workshop you will definitely be getting your hands wet! Handling seaweed and working with ocean water are part of the tactile process.

I am an artist who makes Marine Botanicals/Seaweed pressings, using native seaweed and organic materials sourced from the coastal environment. In this process, seaweed is collaged and dried into paper creating unique designs that introduce the beauty of our marine world. Seaweed pressing has a rich history with ties to the Victorian Era and Newport! I have been exploring seaweed as a medium for over 10 years and own Saltwater Studio in Newport.
Gdzie będziecie
We'll conduct our workshop at my art studio, Saltwater Studio, which showcases local, nature based art inspired by the Ocean. The studio is located in an old building that used to house trolleys, when they were used as public transportation for the city.

I would highly recommend a class in marine botanical at Saltwater Studios. I went with my mother as a birthday treat and had so much fun. It's a truly unique concept and Mary was inviting and engaging and made it a one of a kind experience.

Mary is a very talented artist and teacher! She took me step by step through the process and answered all of my questions clearly. She had fresh seaweed, beautiful variations to play with. She will step back to let you get creative but is in ear shot to help every step of the way if you need it. Bring some extra cash because she also has art for sale in her studio!
I left with three various sized artworks of my own. Packaging and all its about 12"x12"x4". Fits nicely into carry on luggage. Also, she provided detailed aftercare and framing tips. Her process is sustainable. Using recycled supplemental materials.
Definitely a once in a lifetime experience! A++
