Co będziecie robić

Barrio Lastraría is an outdoor gallery of public art from the 19th C, the seminal 1970s and the 21st century. This neighbourhood holds exquisite public spaces that redefined Santiago as a modern metropolis. It has the best examples of colonial, republican and modernist architecture. Through each of these urban elements you'll discover Chilean culture as expressed in the way people have lived and live today. This barrio is the essence of conviviality because of a living, urban legacy and the bohemian culture that resides in this oasis of Santiago. To discover this, you need to know where to look.
I'll take you to sites and deliver an urban content not in the other tours. Together we'll read the story of this city - it's role in the foundation of the country, the capital of an independent republic, its social and political conflicts and its contemporary urbanity.
We'll find hidden artworks, fabulous streetscapes as the facade of a predominantly residential area, and expansive and intimate public spaces used by residents as an extension of their homes, tourists as a destination and Santiaguinos for their recreation.
Other things to note
We'll be walking for about two hours so make sure you have comfortable walking shoes.

In Australia, I was the cofounder of a Master of Arts in Public Space program at RMIT University. I hold a PhD in Architecture (RMIT University Australia) and am a visual artists with 15 years experience creating art in public space. I have been living and working in Barrio Lastarria for 5 years, participating in urban intervention festivals, having my work exhibited at the Museo Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna (Santiago) and have been invited to present my work at various universities. I am currently teaching at two universities in Santiago. I am fascinated by the relationship between art, architecture and public space. Barrio Lastarria would have to be the most interesting part of Santiago, four major art museums, a dozen bookshops, boutique wine outlets, colonial, modern and post modern architecture, parque foretal and cerro Santa Lucia.

Gdzie będziecie

Our walk begins in the centre of Lastarria, the 19th C bohemian quarter of Santiago for artists, writers and politicians. We'll see examples of 20th C and contemporary public artworks and architecture, including the home/workshop of Chile's "Gaudi" Luciano Kulczewski, 19th C modernist and neo-classical buildings. We'll walk through Parque Forestal to Museo Bellas Arts, around Cerro Santa Lucia and end in the iconic cultural centre, the GAM.

This was well worth it. A lovely outing with a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. The sort of excursion you could do more than once and learn something new each time. Thanks Anthony!
