Easy walk on the streets of central Edinburgh to find fossils in the building stones and pavements. Discover fish, ammonoids, plants and other fossilised critters and find out more about 'deep time' and the history of life on Earth as recorded in the rocks. Looking at buildings and the historic landscape of Edinburgh also leads on to stories about the social and cultural history of the city.
Other things to note
The tour does not require you to know anything about geology or fossils before coming along. Al is used to dealing with a wide range of clients from other geologists to people at science festivals.

I hold a Ph. D. in Palaeobiology (the study of ecology and evolution in deep time) and am a Chartered Geologist. During my research career I carried out research in the Smithsonian Institute Museum of Natural History, The Natural History Museum, London and The Natural History Museum, Berlin. I have run geological walks for a wide range of groups in various places in Scotland since going freelance in 2014. I also work as an outdoor leader and first-aid provider.

The Pavement Palaeontology tour offers the chance to find fossils in places around central Edinburgh. The sites themselves are all in public places but what Al offers is the ability to spot and interpret the fossils and examine them with magnifiers with a qualified palaeontologist.

Funny and very interesting tour. We had been walking on things we didn't realize. Alistair was very mindful of the people around us and made sure we could keep our distance to others at all times. We would definitely recommend this walk.

Interesting, well-thought out walking tour highlighting the geology of Edinburgh. We learned about history (wooden water pipes from the 1600s!), building practices, the Flodden Wall, as well as the ancient fossils captured in the city's pavements and building stones. Highly recommended.

What a great experience! An excellent way to explore the city in a different way! I have been to Edinburgh on numerous occasions and was looking for something new. This walk was perfect because I saw things I had never noticed before. I would highly recommend the experience. Alistair is so knowledgeable about everything he showed us and very welcoming.
