Co będziecie robić

When you tell your friends you are kayaking The LA River, do they respond: "The one in "Chinatown" and "Grease"? The river without water?
This is not "that" river. Well, not that part. Navigate two miles of Los Angeles' hidden waterway in a truly unique way: kayak it!

While you can watch Dunaway or Travolta from your dry living room, lets get off the couch and feel as if in Thailand, 'Nam, Florida . . . or "another LA."

Depending on the guest count we may have options of an inflatable tandem kayak, a solo inflatable or hard shells. Coast through calm water, ending at a mini-waterfall where the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant and Lake Balboa feed into the river. It's monitored by Heal the Bay and Federal and local city governments for water quality. Guess the river's length!
Specifics:
1. Bird watch where we've spotted great blue herons, osprey, snow egrets, and cormorants.
2. See edible cattail; fig trees, hemlock, willow and cottonwood.
3. Converse about the history and city's plans for development. Learn what architect is on board to redevelop the river (no Googling).
Other things to note
Will get feet wet and the possibility of your bottom. Recommend to bring extra change of clothes and shoes if you are going out to lunch or somewhere else after.

As a native Angeleno and trained kayak guide, let's enjoy our city's hidden waterway together. You can brag about it later where most people only know about the river as concrete.

I am a white water kayaker on the Kern River. I also grew up near our kayaking spot.

Gdzie będziecie

Start at the Sepulveda Basin Rec. point of entry where birds fish and nest; and continue under the light and water patterns of the Burbank Blvd. bridge. Passing through flora and fauna, and calm waters, about halfway, traverse through "Little Grand Canyon" (early morning look out for hares).
Then we stop at 'Pebble Beach' to stretch and talk. We end at The Tillman Water Recreation Plant & Lake Balboa water fall. We return the same way.

Thank you for a wonderful and unique experience. I would have never known about this part of my city. I hope your efforts to preserve and restore the river will allow many more to enjoy it

Who knew fun could be found on the LA River? Beautiful hot day on the water where we saw birds, lots of rowing and took an assortment of pics. What more could you ask for in one day? I would definitely do this again... for sure!

This was a fascinating experience! We love kayaking and didn't know there was a kayak-able stretch of the LA river before finding Mich's listing. We saw a lot of wildlife! It was really eye-opening because it really brought home some of the issues facing LA and the river. Some stretches felt a bit post-apocalyptic, and we feel motivated to go to LA river clean-up days in future, and keep ourselves up to date on efforts to protect it.

Michelle provides a very insightful look into the history, ecosystem and future of the LA River. Even as a local resident I never had a chance to experience the river in this way. Due to the heavy rains earlier this year the water level appears higher than usual making for a perfect kayaking experience. An abundance of wildlife was seen on our trip down the river including baby fish, rabbits, a turtle, ducks with their ducklings and various other water birds. Michelle was a very patient host that tailors the experience to meet your skill level and needs. This activity does requires a modest level of physical exertion, especially when it comes to rowing the kayak and removing it from the water to dry land. It is also highly recommended to have aqua socks and wear swimming gear since it's guaranteed you will get wet when entering and exiting the kayak. Overall, this was a wonderful experience with Michelle and is highly recommended!

Mich was so accommodating by going out of her way to get another kayak so we could all go, family of three... she allowed our 7 year old to join. He gave the experience two thumbs up! Mich was easy to communicate with and responded to all my questions. We got to see the Great Blue Heron and the Snow Egret! Ducks and their babies too. We were happy to have this unique experience. Who knew you could kayak the LA river!
